  • The Dallas Mavericks are 7-point road favorites when they visit the Detroit Pistons Thursday night
  • Luka Doncic is coming off a 40-point triple-double in a win over the Golden State Warriors
  • Read below for the Mavericks vs Pistons preview, with odds and predictions

Talk about contrasts: the Dallas Mavericks (10-10, 1-7 away), just topped the Golden State Warriors, with Luka Doncic lighting up the reigning champs with a 40-point triple double.

On that same night, the Detroit Pistons (5-18, 3-7 home) gave up 140 in a blasting at the hands of the New York Knicks.

The two teams will collide in Motown in what appears to be a massive mismatch. Doncic is leading the league in scoring, and is one of the top candidates in the NBA MVP odds.

Detroit are owners of the worst record in the NBA, and their best player, reining rookie of the year Cade Cunningham, is out indefinitely as he deals with a shin injury.

Yet somehow, the NBA odds have Dallas as just a 7-point favorite in this one.

Dallas Betting Outlook

We’re running out of superlatives for Doncic, the fifth-year star that’s just 23 years old.

Against GState, he put up 41 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the first meeting between the two teams since the Dubs disposed of them in the West Finals.

The issue for the Mavericks, of course, is if there’s enough support around their star. Despite Luka’s devastating numbers — averaging 33.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 8.6 assists — Dallas enters play at 10-10, and ninth in the ultra-competitive West.

Spencer Dinwiddie is the closest thing to a sidekick, averaging 17 points and 4.8 assists, while shooting 40% from downtown.

Dallas may have newly acquired Kemba Walker in the lineup for his debut outing. If Jason Kidd can squeeze some life out of the four-time all-star, that could be a low-end scorer-playmaker option to at least try to take some pressure of Doncic.

The Mavs have been brutal on the road with a 1-7 mark, the worst road record in the West, and tied with Charlotte for fewest away wins in the NBA. Dallas could benefit from easy buckets: they’re dead last in the NBA at 9.8 fast break points per game, the only team to average less than 10 a game.

Thankfully they boast a sparkling defense, that allows the fourth-fewest points per game (107.6).

Detroit Betting Outlook

Joining Cunningham on the sidelines could be rookie guard Jaden Ivey (knee), who missed the last game vs New York. He’s listed as questionable.

All Detroit players will probably want to forget the last one, as the Knicks shot 56.3% from the field, and a blistering 16-for-35 from three-point range (45.7%). That was the Pistons’ third straight loss after a modest 2-game win streak.

The Pistons struggle on both ends of the court. They are 27th in scoring, putting up 109.1 points a contest, and are tied with the Houston Rockets with the worst field-goal shooting in the NBA at a 44.3% clip.

Defensively, Detroit surrenders 117.7 points per game, with only the San Antonio Spurs hemorrhaging more points. Teams are shooting a blistering 48.6% against them, turning every opponent into a top-5 offense in the association.

Mavericks vs Pistons Prediction

If there is one piece of caution here, it’s that Dallas currently has the worst betting mark in the NBA, going 5-14-1 against the spread so far this season.

Still, the Mavs have dominated this head-to-head, going 4-0 ATS in their last four visits to Motown, and a crisp 5-1-1 ATS overall in the last seven matchups.

With Cunningham out, the Pistons just 3-7 at home and sporting a minus-7.7 point differential, this looks like a game a team with playoff aspirations takes full advantage of.

Pick:

  • Mavericks -7 (-110); 1 unit to win 0.91 units
  • NBA Betting Record: 12-8 ATS, 1-0 ML, 2-3 o/u; 0-1 parlays; +2.35 units
