No one expected the Raptors to go down without a fight and they proved their intestinal fortitude on Saturday by winning Game 4 at home.

Now, Toronto heads back to Philly down 3-1, looking to stave off elimination again on Monday (April 25) in Game 5.

The 76ers opened as a 7.5-point home favorite, in a contest that features a total of 209.5. Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm ET at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA, with NBA TV providing the coverage.

There are significant injuries to monitor for both clubs. Sixers big man Joel Embiid continues to be hampered by a thumb injury on his right hand, and it clearly affected his performance in Game 4. Embiid got off to a 3-of-10 start from the field in the first half, and finished with just 21 points.

Joel Embiid will require surgery to address the ligament tear in his right thumb, but that procedure will wait until after the Sixers' season, sources tell ESPN.

An MRI on Sunday confirmed a ligament tear in his thumb, but the team doesn’t expect the injury to get worse paving the way for Embiid to continue playing.

Toronto’s injury situation appears a little more dire. All-star point guard Fred VanVleet left Saturday’s contest in the second quarter with a hip injury and did not return.

He reportedly underwent an MRI later that day, and is now out as confirmed by TSN’s Kayla Grey. If he’s unable to go, expect plenty more responsibility to be dumped on Gary Trent Jr.

After struggling in Games 1 and 2 in Philly, Trent Jr. responded with back-to-back 24 point efforts in Games 3 and 4.

The Raptors welcomed back Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes on Saturday, who hadn’t played since suffering an ankle injury in Game 1.  Barnes came off the bench in his return, logging 26 minutes and chipping in 6 points and 11 rebounds.

Toronto’s Game 4 victory was fuelled by Pascal Siakam. If the Raps hope to extend this series, they’ll need another Herculean effort from Spicy P on Monday, especially if VanVleet sits.

Siakam scored a game-high 34 points in Game 4, pouring in 15 over the final frame. The effort came one game after a dismal performance, where he managed only 12 points and was shut out over the final quarter.

After three consecutive sub-par defensive performances, Toronto’s D finally showed up in Game 4. The Raps held Philly to 42.5% from the field, while forcing 16 turnovers. The 76ers had shot above 51% in the three previous matchups, but got dismal shooting nights from four of their five starters. Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey and Danny Green were a combined 18-of-52 from the field, including 5-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Despite the win, Toronto actually shot a lower percentage than Philly (42%). However, they were able to overcome the inefficient shooting by gobbling up seven more offensive rebounds, and by getting to the line 10 more times.

The latest NBA title odds have the 76ers as the fifth-favorite (+1000) with Toronto the longest among playoff teams (+50000). Even the Raptors’ odds to win the Eastern Conference are an astronomical +25000.

Potentially losing VanVleet is a big blow for the Raps, but they do have plenty of experience playing without him this season. Toronto was 9-8 in 17 games minus its starting point guard, including 4-1 in the last five contests he sat. Two of those last four victories were against the 76ers, while the Raps also beat Brooklyn twice this season without VanVleet.

Philadelphia cruised to two easy wins at home in Games 1 and 2, but Toronto was missing Barnes for most of those losses. His presence is huge especially at the offensive end. He gives the Raps instant energy and another option that can create his own shot. He’s also dynamic on the glass, keeping possessions alive and gobbling up rebounds.

Let’s also not discount how good Toronto was on the road this season. They were 25-17-1 away from home against the spread, and won outright as an underdog at Phoenix, Denver and Philadelphia over the final six weeks of the regular season.

With or without VanVleet, 7.5 points in a must win game is too much to be laying against a Nick Nurse team.
