Tyler Herro’s 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year Odds Still Listed at +6300 Despite Turning Heads in Summer League

Updated: March 27, 2020 at 9:09 am EDTPublished:

- Tyler Herro was picked 13th overall by the Miami Heat in the 2019 NBA Draft
- He knocked down five three-pointers and finished with 18 points in his first NBA Summer League game
- Herro still trails Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett by a considerable margin in the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year odds
Tyler Herro can flat out shoot the basketball, but is the Miami Heat freshman a true threat to win the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year Award?
2020 NBA Rookie of the Year Odds
Player | Odds |
---|---|
Zion Williamson | -155 |
Ja Morant | +333 |
RJ Barrett | +450 |
Darius Garland | +1500 |
De’Andre Hunter | +1800 |
Tyler Herro | +6500 |
*Odds taken 07/03/19
The NBA Rookie of the Year Odds show that Herro has some ground to make up, but after putting up 18 points on 50% shooting from three in his NBA Summer League debut, bettors are taking notice. For my money though, I’m going to have to see more from him to consider the former Kentucky Wildcat a threat to win the award. I’m looking at two former Duke Blue Devils instead.
Tyler Herro can splash from anywhere 💦

Zion Williamson Offering Great Value
There hasn’t been a player to enter the NBA with this much hype since LeBron James and it’s well deserved. Zion Williamson has the game to contribute right away and is actually going to be surrounded by a much better roster than most first-overall picks. After the Anthony Davis deal and some shrewd signings by the New Orleans Pelicans in free agency, Williamson has a great chance to put up not only great stats in year one, but wins as well.

The hype train is something that shouldn’t be ignored here either. With all the attention Williamson will receive, he has a clear advantage over the other rookies. Every highlight he has will be shown on ESPN and he’ll be the talk of the league all year.
The fact you can still get -155 on Williamson is a surprise to me. I think that number will be much less favorable in short order, so if you’re like me and believe in Williamson, bet him now and bet him aggressively.
Could RJ Barrett Steal the Award From His Former Teammate?
RJ Barrett landed in a great situation, even if the New York Knicks stuck out in free agency. The reality of the situation is had the Knicks landed Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, Barrett would have been largely overshadowed. Now he can rack up points on a roster that is going to need him to be a volume scorer, while soaking up all the attention.

The Knicks may not win games in bunches like the Pelicans, but Barrett should still get plenty of opportunity to shine under the bright lights at Madison Square Garden.
RJ vs. Zion. This Friday. ✊

Despite being listed third, consider Barrett the only true dark horse candidate. It’s going to take something remarkable to upend Williamson and the Knicks rookie is one of the few first year players who will have a perfect scenario and a chance to do it.
