Loyer Lifts Davidson

Transfer Foster Loyer is Davidson’s leading scorer so far in the young season with an average of 17.0 points a game. The junior guard previously played at Michigan State.

Loyer, though, was held to just seven points on 3-of-12 shooting by San Francisco. That came after he went off for 27 points a win over Delaware in his Davidson debut.

Sophomore forward Sam Mennenga has been consistent for Davidson as he is averaging 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. He had 14 points and nine rebounds against San Francisco and 13 and 10 versus Delaware.

Junior forward Hyunjung Lee has looked strong after spending six weeks over the summer with the South Korean national team. He has averages of 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

Lee finished with 11 points and nine points in San Francisco.

Senior forward Luke Brajkovic’s 17 points topped the Wildcats against the Dons and raised his season average to 12.0.

The Wildcats had 17 turnovers at Chase Arena, home building of Golden State Warriors superstar and Davidson alum Stephen Curry. However, Davidson also forced 18 giveaways.

Allen Steady for Aggies

After finishing sixth in scoring in the Big Ten last season at Nebraska with a 16.5 average, junior guard Teddy Allen has been a steady presence for New Mexico State in its first two games.

The transfer scored a team-leading 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the win over UTEP and is averaging 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. The well-traveled Allen in now in his third program after also playing at West Virginia.

Junior guard Jabari Rice had 15 points and three steals against the Miners and is second on the team with a 13.5 scoring average.

Senior forward Donnie Tillman is third with an 11.0 average while also pulling down 6.5 boards a game. He had a solid all-round game Saturday in contributing 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Senior forward Yuat Alok had a season-high 13 points versus UTEP. He is a transfer from Coppin State.

New Mexico State shot 52% from the field and 8 of 20 (40%) from three-point range while outrebounding the Miners 28-19. However, the Aggies did have 15 turnovers.

Davidson vs New Mexico State Prediction

The schools have played once before with New Mexico State winning a 69-68 squeaker during the 2017-18 season at Honolulu.

The winner of the Davidson-New Mexico State game advances to the semifinals Friday to face the winner of the first-round matchup between Pennsylvania (2-2) and Utah (3-0). The two losers meet in the consolation bracket the same day.

Saturday marks the final day of the eight-team event.

Given a boost by the addition of Loyer, look for a veteran-laden Davidson team to get the better of this matchup.
