The Seton Hall Pirates (5-4, 2-1 Big East) continue conference play Wednesday evening at home from Newark, New Jersey against the Georgetown Hoyas (3-4, 1-2 Big East). Tip off is set for 5:00 p.m. ET inside the Prudential Center
Seton Hall is coming off an 80-77 overtime loss at home to Providence Sunday. Junior guard Takal Molson missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the end of the overtime period as the Friars hung on for the victory.
Meantime, the Red Storm avenged an overtime loss to Georgetown with an 11-point win Sunday. The Hoyas leading scorer, Jahvon Blair, had a team-high 25 points and six assists for Patrick Ewing’s team in defeat. Seton Hall is a favorite in this one.

The heartbreaking home loss by Seton Hall Sunday to Providence snapped a four-game win streak by the Pirates. Kevin Willard’s team is rated No. 51 by KenPom, currently the sixth-best slot in the conference. That’s a notch below where they were predicted to finish in the Big East preseason rankings.
Meantime, Ewing’s Hoyas are rated No. 106 by KenPom. That’s last in the conference — which is also where the coaches predicted Georgetown would finish in the preseason poll..
Hall Pass
Last season, the Pirates finished the season ranked No. 15 in the AP poll and had the potential to make a deep NCAA Tournament run behind Big East Player of the Year Myles Powell and fellow starters Romaro Gill and Quincy McKnight. Also, that trio is all gone, forcing Willard to reload in a conference dominated by Villanova in recent years.
Enter Harvard graduate transfer Bryce Aiken, Molson, freshmen Jahari Long, Dimingus Stevens and Jeff Ngandu — and the team’s leading scorer, senior forward Sandro Mamukelashvili.

The 6-foot-11 Georgian native is averaging 20 points and seven rebounds a game so far after suffering a wrist injury that forced him to miss ten games last year. But so far, so good for Mamukelashvili this season.
His traditional three-point play forced overtime Sunday and he’s become the focal point for Willard. Stopping him — or at least slowing him down — will be a challenge for the Hoyas.
Rebuilding Under a Legend
It may be hard to believe, but this is already Year No. 4 of the Patrick Ewing Era at his alma mater. The head coach has yet to reach the NCAA Tournament in his tenure, which his predecessor John Thompson III did eight times over 13 seasons in the nation’s capital.
The 6-foot-4 Blair has vastly improved from last season. The senior from Canada averaged nearly 11 points per game in 2019-20 — but shot just 36-percent from the field and under 33-percent from beyond the arc on six attempts per game. This year, Blair is averaging nearly 20 points per game (on 44-percent shooting) and has shown the ability to take over a game, leading the team in scoring in five of the Hoyas’ seven games.
Blair is one of four players averaging in double-figures for Ewing. One of those players, Donald Carey, scored 19 against St. John’s in that overtime loss Sunday. Another, Qudus Wahab, put up 12 points before fouling out.
If Blair can get help form his supporting cast, Georgetown could pull off the road upset.
Pirate Booty
While the Hoyas have shown signs of improving, they’re simply not in the Pirates’ class just yet.
Willard has a history of scheduling tough early on in the season and that was the case again this year. The team lost 71-70 to Louisville in its season opener and 83-70 to Oregon, the Pac-12’s highest-rated team by KenPom (currently at No. 19).

Those early tests should help Seton Hall as it navigates an always competitive Big East slate. This year’s squad may not be a sleeper Final Four pick (like it was for some observers last season). But the Pirates certainly have enough to handle the Hoyas at home Wednesday — especially coming off an overtime loss at the Prudential Center.
