One of the preseason favorites in the March Madness odds, the Duke Blue Devils (13-5, 7-11 ATS) suddenly find themselves outside the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season.

On Saturday, January 21st, they have a huge conference clash with the Miami Hurricanes (15-3, 10-8) who are one of the most pleasant surprises in college ball this year. Tipoff goes at noon ET from Cameron Indoor Stadium where the Blue Devils are a spotless 9-0 this season.

Even though Miami has been the better team this campaign, it’s Duke that are 5.5-point favorites in the college basketball odds for this matchup. More Miami vs Duke odds can be seen below, plus our best bet and prediction for this hardcourt battle.

Hurricanes Flatlining After Terrific Start

Finishing December on a tear, Miami were an incredible 13-1 to start this season, scoring big wins over ranked teams like Virginia, Providence and Rutgers. Since the calendar flipped to 2023, they’ve hit a bit of a rut, winning two and losing two as their overall record currently stands at 15-3.

Defense has been a cause for concern this month as they’ve allowed an average of 77.3 points per contest in the new year. According to KenPom, they rank just 141st in adjusted defensive efficiency, but that is offset by a top 10 ranking in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Isaiah Wong is the straw that stirs the drink for this Hurricanes offense. He leads the way with 16.7 points and 3.8 assists per game for Miami.

Although he’s coming off a brutal shooting performance against Syracuse, where he went just 1-8 from the floor, he still managed to go to the line seven times, making six free throw attempts. Standing only 6’4″ and weighing 184 pounds, the guard is relentless driving the ball. Only one player in the ACC has taken more free throws this year than the Miami guard, who shoots 83% from the charity stripe.

Blue Devils Unbeatable at Home

As always, the Cameron Crazies remain some of the most rambunctious fans in all of college basketball and have helped spur their team to a 9-0 home start this season. While they’re getting the victories, they haven’t fared too well against the spread, covering just once in four home games since the start of December.

This Duke team doesn’t have a legit superstar contending in the Wooden Award odds like in year’s past. Their leading scorer, freshman Kyle Filipowski, doesn’t even average 15 points per game. In fact, he is one of only two Blue Devils who average double digits in scoring.

Unfortunately for them, that other player is Jeremy Roach who is questionable to even play on Saturday because of a toe injury. Despite a 13-5 record, Duke are just .500 in their last six.

They’ve really struggled shooting the three ball this year, making just over 31% of their attempts, which puts them in the bottom 15% of all Division I programs. If they have serious designs on making a title run this year, they’ll have to make a substantial improvement on that mark.

Miami vs Duke Pick and Prediction

It’s the first head-to-head game between these two sides this season with the return match just over two weeks away in Miami. Both contests last year were agonizingly close, with each squad getting a win and both matchups decided by four points or less.

Lacking superstars of years’ past when they used to make mincemeat of the ‘Canes, Duke has failed to cover in their last three tilts with Miami.

No doubt, home court will be a big advantage, as always for the Blue Devils. Regardless, they’ll need to do more than just rest on their laurels as the hosts. Duke is 0-5 ATS in their last five against teams with a winning record.

Although Miami have struggled against tougher competition as of late, they have shown incredible resolve this year. With a potential big absence in the backcourt for Duke, we like Wong to propel the Hurricanes to a big ACC upset in the college basketball odds, and deal Duke their first taste of defeat at home this season.

Pick: Miami Hurricanes Moneyline (+180)
