Mississippi Valley State Betting Analysis

Last year was a season to forget for Mississippi Valley State, which finished last in the SWAC with a record of 2-26. Their first win of the season last year didn’t come until January. So there is good reason that they’re 40.5 points underdogs against Baylor.

The Delta Devils are ranked 361st in the pre-season KenPom rankings with only two Division I squads ranked lower than them. Last season, they only lost three of 28 games by 41 or more points. One positive for them is that they’re getting perhaps their stiffest test of the season out of the way early against Baylor.

Unfortunately, most of their top scorers from last season are gone. The Delta Devils had four players average at least 10 points per game last season and none of them are back this year.

Baylor Bears Betting Analysis

Yes, they are in the same conference as the defending NCAA Champions, but many are picking Baylor as the team to beat in the Big 12 Conference Title odds. They are expected to have a terrific backcourt this year led by returning 5th year senior, Adam Flagler and freshman Keyonte George.

Scott Drew’s team is always known for their great defense, but the Bears offense has ranked in the top 20 in adjusted efficiency in 12 of the last 15 seasons as well. George is projected to be arguably the best scorer in the freshman class. He scored 37 points in a win over Canada’s U23 team showing his offensive explosiveness.

The Bears were knocked out of the NCAA tournament by the North Carolina Tar Heels last year, succumbing 93-86 in overtime. In that contest, they erased a 25 point deficit to force the extra session only to fall to the eventual finalists from North Carolina. Flagler led the way with 27 points in that one, but is expected to be more of a distributor for the Bears this year.

Mississippi Valley State vs Baylor Prediction

Baylor plays in the best conference in college basketball and according to Ken Pomeroy, it’s not even that close. This game will not be close, but the question is, can they actually beat the Delta Devils by more than 40 points? Even for a big mismatch, that’s a huge spread.

There were two games last year where Baylor was able to defeat their opponents by 40+ points with one of those wins coming against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who finished ahead of the Delta Devils in the SWAC standings last year and are expected to finish in front of Mississippi Valley State once again.

Taking all things into consideration including the fact that the Delta Devils don’t have any of their top four scorers back from last year, let’s go with Baylor domination in this one and pick the Bears to cover the huge 40.5-point spread in their season-opener on Monday.

Pick: Baylor Bears -40.5 (-104)
