Should the 19th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes be worried? The unbeaten Seton Hall Pirates already show one victory over a Big Ten powerhouse this season.

Seton Hall (3-0) toppled the #4 Michigan Wolverines 67-65. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes (3-1) were absorbing a 71-65 setback from the Xavier Muskateers.

Oddsmakers believe that the Buckeyes indeed have a problem on their hands. It’s Seton Hall that are 1-point favorites in this game, an open-round match at the Fort Myers Tipoff Classic. Seton Hall is 3-0 against the spread this season.

Ohio State Buckeyes Betting Trends

The Buckeyes players were lamenting their own lack of toughness following their loss to Xavier. The Muskateers utilized their physicality and length advantage over the Buckeyes to control the glass.

Xavier finished the game holding a 43-35 edge in rebounding, including a 16-11 mark in offensive boards. Xavier players made 14 layups.

Offensively, Ohio State dug itself into an early disadvantage by opening 1-for-10 from the field. The Buckeyes trailed by nine points at the half. They finished the game shooting a dismal 37.7% from the floor (23-of-61).

Forward EJ Lindell led the Buckeyes with17 points, seven rebounds and a career-high eight blocked shots. Freshman guard Meechie Johnson scored 14 points. He finished hitting 5-of-12 shots from the field and was 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

Seton Hall Pirates Betting Trends

While Xavier utilized its length to overcome the Buckeyes, Seton Hall counted on its long-range ability to take care of the Wolverines. Displaying balanced scoring, the Pirates were effective from beyond the arc (9-of-30, 30%) to stymie Michigan on the road at Crisler Arena as 8-point underdogs.

In a rematch of the 1989 NCAA championship game won by Michigan, it was Seton Hall’s first victory on the road over a non-conference team ranked among the top five. Overall, it was the first victory by the Pirates against a top-five team since knocking off Temple in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

The Pirates trailed by as much as 11 points. They didn’t hold a second-half lead until there was 1:15 left to play. Jared Rhoden paced the Seton Hall attack with 16 points. Bryce Aiken and Tray Jackson each contibuted 13 points.

Meanwhile, the Pirates held 7-foot-2 Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson to one field goal over the game’s final 15 minutes. Seton Hall’s bench outscored the Michigan bench 37-9.

Seton Hall-Ohio State Prediction

This will be the sixth meeting between Ohio State and Seton Hall. The Buckeyes hold a 3-2 edge. The Pirates won the most recent meeting, a 75-59 victory on December 20, 2003.

Seton Hall are no slouches. The Pirates played in four straight NCAA Tournaments from 2016-19. Last year, a COVID-19 outbreak within the team basically scuttled their season.

The Buckeyes are playing without forward Justice Sueing. He’s out indefinitely with an abdominal injury. Forward Seth Towns (back) is also out for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are ranked No. 9 in the KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency ratings. The Pirates are leading the nation in opposition effective field goal percentage. Seton Hall is also ranked No. 2 nationally at defending 3-point attempts. This could be vital. Ohio State is shooting 36.6% from 3-point range.

The Pirates play hard and work the glass effectively. Seton Hall is a decent offensive team, situated 52nd in the KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency ratings. This is another bad matchup for the Buckeyes.
