Seton Hall on a Roll

Seton Hall is coming off one of its best wins of the season, beating Marquette 70-63 on Thursday night as a three-point underdog to stay perfect in conference play.

Senior guard Sharvar Reynolds came up big down the stretch. His 3-point field goal with 43 seconds left broke a 61-61 tie and he added two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to give Seton Hall a seven-point lead.

Senior forward Sandro Mamukelashvili led the Pirates with 17 points and seven assists. Junior wing Jared Rhoden added 16 points and eight rebounds.

That duo is leading the way for Seton Hall.

After flirting with entering the NBA Draft over the summer, Mamukelashvili is averaging 20.0 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Rhoden has averages of 14.4 points and 7.5 rebounds and senior wing Myles Cale is scoring 10.0 points a game.

All in all, that trio has done a solid job in the wake of Seton Hall losing three starters from a 2019-20 team that shared the Big East title with Creighton and Villanova.

Sophomore guard Tray Jackson becomes eligible Sunday for Seton Hall after transferring from Missouri.

Providence’s Dynamic Duo

This is the Big East opener for Providence, playing for the first time since Dec. 9 when it beat TCU 70-63 as a one-point road underdog, has basically been a two-man show this season.

Junior David Duke and senior center Nate Watson have combined to score 51% of the Friars’ points.

Duke has been stuffing the stat sheet with averages of 19.7 points 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals. Watson is scoring 18.7 points a game.

Before the season was interrupted by the postponements, Duke was one of the hottest scorers in the country. He scored 28 points in back-to-back games against Fairleigh Dickinson and TCU.

Duke hit nine of 14 shots against Fairleigh Dickinson. Versus TCU, he was 11 of 19 overall and five of nine on 3-pointers.

Watson had 18 points and eight rebounds against the Horned Frogs as Providence had a 33-20 edge on the boards. The Friars also scored 26 points off 20 turnovers.

Injury report

Seton Hall graduate transfer guard Bryce Aiken returned to action against Marquette and played 12 minutes after sitting out six games. The former Harvard standout looked rusty as he made just one of six field goal attempts and scored three points.

Unfriendly Hosts

Providence and Seton Hall split two games last season, both winning on their home floors.

Rhoden had 15 points and eight rebounds in the Pirates’ 73-64 victory in the first game, which was a push as Seton Hall was favored by nine points. In the rematch, the Friars won 74-71 as one-point underdogs.

Providence has lost in each of its last five trips to the Prudential Center. Look for that trend as Seton Hall is rolling with four straight covers while the Friars figure to be a bit rusty.
