Seton Hall Overcoming Uneven Start

Seton Hall has endured a roller coaster start to its 2020-21 campaign. After claiming a share of the Big East regular season title last spring, the Pirates stumbled out of the gate this time around, falling to SU defeat in three of their first four contests, all away from home court. However, the club has since rediscovered their scoring touch, averaging 84.3 points per game in three straight wins, capped by last week’s victory over the Red Storm as five-point home chalk.

Sandro Mamukelashvili has played a huge role in the team’s reversal of fortune. The senior guard piled up a season-high 32 points in the Pirates’ victory over St. John’s, and leads the squad with 20.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. The big man from Tbilisi, Georgia has stepped up in the wake of Myles Powell’s departure for the NBA, seeing action in a team-high 34.6 minutes per game. “Mamu” also impressed in his last appearance against Marquette, recording 26 points and nine rebounds in the Pirates’ 88-79 win as three-point road underdogs.

Pirates Dominating in Dates with Marquette

The Pirates have dominated Marquette in recent meetings, with that February win marking their fourth straight victory over the Golden Eagles. Seton Hall has also been a reliable bet when facing their Catholic school rivals. In addition to covering in each of their past five overall dates, the Pirates sport a sparkling 10-1-1 ATS record in 12 visits to Marquette as betting underdogs since 2007. The club is also 3-1 SU in four road dates with Marquette while pegged as underdogs by fewer than five points.

Seton Hall’s recent offensive outburst has rewarded sports bettors and lifted the club to No. 33 in adjusted offensive efficiency at Kempom, but the club could be hard pressed to contain a Marquette offense that is coming off a character building 89-84 win over Creighton.

Golden Eagles Demonstrate Character in Comeback Wins

Winners in just eight conference matchups last season, the Golden Eagles turned in an impressive second-half performance to claim a comeback victory over the Bluejays. In addition to getting a combined 52 points out of starters Koby McEwen, Dawson Garcia, and DJ Carton, the club received solid contributions off the bench, with Justin Lewis and Greg Elliott adding 25 points.

But while their victory over Creighton marked their second SU win of the season over a team listed among the top ten in the AP Top 25, the Golden Eagles must find a way to contain opposing shooters when battling conference rivals. Marquette has allowed 84 or more points in four of six meetings with Big East opponents, generating a 5-1 run for the UNDER in those contests.

Can Marquette Avoid Slow Start vs Rival Pirates?

The Golden Eagles also faltered early on in their recent dates with Creighton and UCLA, something they can ill afford to do against a Pirates squad that has held opponents to an average of just 25.5 first-half points over their past two outings. While Marquette has been steady at home, and are well positioned to stop their slide against the Pirates, look for Seton Hall to extend their ATS win streak in a high-scoring affair on Thursday night.

The Picks: Seton Hall +4.5 (-110); OVER 145 (-110)
