Tennessee Betting Outlook

Tennessee’s defense has been suffocating this season. The Volunteers are first in the nation in three-point field goal percentage allowed (21.6), second in overall field goal percentage (32.7), and third in scoring (51.2).

Tennessee has held seven of its nine opponents under 50 points. That includes Eastern Kentucky, which shot a measly 22.1% (15 of 68), including 17.1% (6 of 354) from three-point range. The Colonels came into the game averaging 83.5 points.

Sophomore guard Zakai Ziegler led Tennessee’s defensive effort with four steals and senior forward Uros Plavsic had three. Senior forward Olivier Nkamhoua blocked three shots.

Tyreke Key led Tennessee with 17 points but left the game with 6:15 left with a leg cramp, though he is expected to play Sunday. So, too, is senior guard Santiago Vescovi after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury.

Vescovi is averaging 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.6 steals a game. Key has an 11.4 scoring average after sitting out last season with a shoulder injury following his transfer from Indiana State.

Freshman forward Julian Phillips leads Tennessee in scoring at 12.2 points a game. He also is pulling down 5.7 rebounds and dishing 2.1 assists a game.

Nkamhoua has averages of 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.

Phillips had 16 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday for his first collegiate double-double. Plavsic added 13 points and seven rebounds, Ziegler contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists and Nkamhoua had 10 points and eight boards.

Tennessee rolled despite making just 8 of 34 (23.5%) shots from beyond the arc.

Maryland Betting Outlook

Senior guard Jahmir Young has made a big impact in his first season in the program.

The Charlotte transfer is averaging 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. He scored a game-high 17 points in the loss to Wisconsin.

Young, though, couldn’t save the Terrapins by himself. They shot a season-low 38.2% (21 of 55).

Sophomore forward Julian Reese chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Donta Scott had nine points and 10 rebounds while shooting just 3 for 14.

The Terrapins play strong defense, though not quite to the level of Tennessee. They are 19th nationally in three-point field goal percentage allowed (26.9) and 36th in scoring defense (61.3).

Scott is averaging 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds and senior guard Hakim Hart’s season numbers are 12.8 and 5.3. Reese is scoring 12.3 points and snaring 7.6 rebounds per contest.

Tennessee vs Maryland Prediction

The teams haven’t met since the 1984-85 season when Maryland rolled to a 72-49 victory. The Terrapins are more likely to score 49 points than 72 against Tennessee’s strong defense this time around.

Pick: Tennessee -5 (-110)

Season record: 13-7 (+5.3 units) ATS, 0-3 (-3.0 units) ML
