Stiff competition has been the norm for the Cardinal so far this year having already played against Wisconsin, San Diego State, Ole Miss, Florida State, and Memphis. They will not be intimidated or shy away from this conference battle.

UCLA Bruins Hitting the Over in Betting Odds

Run and gun and score the ball. That seems to be the early season mantra for UCLA and it’s fun to watch. Yes, we’re not even through the first month of the season, but the Bruins are averaging 83 points per game and clicking in all facets on offense.

According to the KenPom ratings, they are 8th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency at 115.0, 25th with a 56.3 effective field goal percentage and even hitting the triple at a high rate of 39.1% which is 24th among Division I schools.

They’ve got five players averaging double digits in scoring which is very impressive for a college team. Led by 6’7, 225 pound guard, Jamie Jaquez Jr. who scored a season-high 27 points on 13 of 17 shooting, the Bruins are coming off an 81-60 win over Bellarmine where they shot a very efficient 60.8% from the field.

One worrisome stat to watch out for is the Bruins record away from home. They haven’t played any official road games this season, but UCLA lost both of their neutral site games to Illinois and Baylor back-to-back a couple weeks ago.

Still, the offense has been able to keep them competitive in every game and makes them an outside threat in the odds to win the national championship. They scored 70 or more in both of those losses and kept the scoreline within single digits.

Stanford Cardinal Betting Outlook

It’s been a tough start to the season for Stanford with a record under .500 but that’s because they’ve played a tough non-conference slate up to this point. It won’t get any easier when they’re underdogs against UCLA on Thursday in the college basketball odds. Stanford dropped both meetings to UCLA last year.

Date Home-Away Spread Over/Under

01/23/2021 STAN 73 – UCLA 72 (OT) STAN Over
01/15/2020 UCLA 59 – STAN 74 STAN Push
03/13/2019 UCLA 79 – STAN 72 UCLA Under

The series between these two has been pretty evenly matched lately with each side winning three out of the last six games and each team covering the spread in three of the last six meetings.

While UCLA is firing on all cylinders on offense, you might say the opposite is true for Stanford. Although their adjusted offensive efficiency is not bad with a KenPom rating of 104.9 which ranks 107th, it’s the three-ball that’s let them down big time. At 28.3% from beyond the arc, the Cardinal rank 320th in the nation.

In their last two games, a win against Florida State and more recently a loss to Memphis, Stanford shot a combined 13-for-59 from long distance, for a porous 22%. It’s a minor miracle they escaped with a 70-60 win over the Seminoles where they were just 3-for-26 on three-point attempts.

UCLA vs Stanford Prediction

While UCLA is the more exciting team with higher expectations, the one area where Stanford can hang their hat is on the defensive side of the ball. They rank 41st in the nation with an adjusted defensive efficiency of 93.4 according to KenPom.

They have given up 60 or less points in three of their last four games and can choke the offense out of the opposition. You can bet that strategy will be put through a thorough assessment in the college basketball odds against UCLA.

Deservedly so, UCLA get the edge in the college basketball betting line from the oddsmakers in this one, but with the home crowd behind them, we like Stanford to keep this conference matchup close. Our prediction is that the Cards keep this game within five points and maybe, just maybe, get the outright upset.

Pick: Stanford Cardinal + 5.5 (-102)
