No. 3 Clemson now has the second-best National Championship odds after beating Virginia in the ACC Title game. The Tigers are listed at +200 odds, next to only No. 1 LSU (+125).
Clemson has the playoff experience and momentum to make another impressive run this year, but Joe Burrow and Louisiana State may have other ideas.
Is Clemson a good bet to win a second consecutive National Championship?
2020 National Championship Odds
Team | Odds |

LSU (#1) | +125 |
Clemson (#3) | +200 |
Ohio State (#2) | +210 |
Oklahoma (#4) | +1000 |
Odds taken Dec. 8
Clemson Dominates Virginia
Clemson blew out Virginia 62-17 to win its fifth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title on Saturday. QB Trevor Lawrence went 16-for-22 passing for 302 yards and four touchdowns, while RB Travis Etienne rushed for over 100 yards (114) for the eighth time this season.
Clemson has now won 28 straight games and have looked especially dominant ever since narrowly avoiding an upset loss to North Carolina on Sept. 28. The Tigers have won their last eight games by at least 30 points and have covered the spread in all but one of those contests.
The knock on Clemson has been their relatively soft ACC schedule. The Tigers have only played one team (Virginia) that is currently ranked in the AP Top 25 poll. Is this team good enough to get it done against elite opponents in the playoffs?
Tigers Prior Playoff Experience
Clemson will benefit from having made four straight appearances in the CFP. They won the National Championship last season over Alabama thanks to big games from Lawrence, Etienne, Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins, among others. All four of those talented players are still with the team.
The Tigers also have a great head coach in Dabo Swinney, who took over the role at Clemson in 2008. He’s led the Tigers to six conference titles and two championships. He has the edge over Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, who is in his first season as full-time head coach of the team.
The Tigers’ experience is a big reason why they are receiving the early money against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. The game opened as a pick’em, but Clemson is already up to -2 favorites at some sportsbooks.
LSU Still Superior
I’d like Clemson more at +200 if it weren’t for the dominance of LSU this season. They’ve been remarkably consistent every week and have the runaway Heisman favorite at QB in Joe Burrow. They met every challenge they’ve been faced with, including beating ranked Texas, Florida, Auburn, Alabama and Georgia teams.
Joe Burrow: “We will play anyone, anywhere. You can take us to Canada and we’ll play on a gravel lot.” #LSU

LSU is being listed as 13-point favorites over Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl. The Tigers have a very good chance of winning considering the Sooners are giving up 330.6 yards per game despite playing in an easier Big 12 Conference. Jalen Hurts can help Oklahoma score on LSU, but the Sooners just don’t have the defense to stop this Tigers powerhouse.
Analysis on Clemson’s National Championship Odds
Clemson is rolling right now, but they’re going to face their first real test of the season in the Fiesta Bowl.
Ohio State may be getting undervalued in the game due to recently having a a bad first half against Wisconsin and one bad quarter against Penn State. Aside from those blemishes, the Buckeyes have been an absolute powerhouse and navigated one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
Clemson is not guaranteed to get past Ohio State, while LSU is a great bet to beat Oklahoma and play in the championship game.
Considering neither Clemson or LSU have negative odds, I’d rather bet on Burrow and LSU taking home the title.
Pick: LSU (+125)
