Mississippi Valley State open their season with a tough test. Let’s take a look at both programs before settling on the best bet on the board.

Tigers Coming off Big Victory

Jackson State moved to 2-0 on the season with their upset win over Grambling State last weekend. They came away with the 33-28 victory thanks to an incredible performance from running back Tyson Alexander. He finished with 184 rushing yards on only 17 carries.

Quarterback Jalon Jones was also efficient once again, and now has six touchdowns on the year without throwing an interception. The win over Grambling  was the first for the program since 2012, helping cement JSU as a true contender in the SWAC this year.

Deion Sanders has brought a confidence and swagger to the Jackson State program. The reality is the bravado would have fallen flat if the Tigers came out of the gates playing poorly. The good news is, they’ve been dominant – outscoring their two opponents by a combined 58 points.

And now, prime time is in prime time on Sunday afternoon on ESPN2. The Tigers passed their first big test of the year knocking off Grambling State, the added spotlight is test number two.

Delta Devils Open Season With Rare Opportunity

Mississippi Valley State head coach Vincent Dancy is a Jackson State alumnus and understands very clearly the opportunity at hand. He admitted this week playing his alma mater is a big deal. Dancy acknowledged this fact saying “This is the only opportunity we’ll really have to show people who we really are when we’re nationally televised”.

Here’s the issue: while Jackson State continues to build momentum it’s a much different case for the Delta Devils.

Mississippi Valley State is playing its first game since finishing the 2019 season with a 2-9 record. They are coming out of the gate with what’s likely to be their biggest game of the season.

It can’t be easy to play your Super Bowl before taking a competitive snap. It’s harder still when the roster isn’t flush with talent. The lone bright spot is linebacker Jerry Garner, who racked up 10.5 tackles for loss in 2019. He’ll be tasked with trying to shut down Alexander, which won’t be easy.

Jackson State has made two big statements in two games. Now they have a national audience on ESPN and they should be expected to impress once again. Sanders and his collection of stars should win this one with relative ease.

  • The Pick: Jackson State -14.5 (-109)
