Utah State Looks to Build on Mountain West Title

Coming off an impressive 11-3 season with a Mountain West title, Utah State looks ready to take another leap forward in 2022. The Aggies enter this season on a high after beating Oregon State in last year’s LA Bowl. Incredibly, that victory was the program’s first-ever against a Power 5 opponent in the postseason.

This Utah State team is here to prove they belong.

Head coach Blake Anderson and his new coaching staff unlocked the Aggies’ offensive prowess last season. Veteran quarterback Logan Bonner came with Anderson from Arkansas State. Together, the tandem installed Anderson’s offensive scheme at Utah State and flourished. The Aggies averaged 446 yards and 33 points per game last season.

After Bonner’s graduation, Anderson was able to secure the transfer of Levi Williams from Wyoming to come in and run his offense. Williams scored a combined 26 touchdowns in three seasons with the Cowboys.

On defense, the performance of the Aggies is far less predictable.

The unit was far from consistent last year, giving up close to 400 yards per game. The Aggies seemed to find their groove down the stretch, allowing 24 points or less in seven of their last nine contests. Unfortunately, many of the team’s most talented defenders either graduated or moved on via the transfer portal. The back end of this unit could be highly combustible.

Huskies Aim for Respect

Veteran head coach Jim Mora will look to leave his mark on the struggling Huskies program from the jump. Frankly, the Huskies could use all the help they can get.

UConn stumbled to a 1-11 season in 2021. Their offense averaged a pitiful 265 yards per game while scoring only 19 touchdowns all year. Starting quarterback Steven Krajewski threw for just seven touchdowns while tossing 10 interceptions.

UConn didn’t just lose in 2021, they were embarrassed. The Huskies were absolutely run off the field, losing by an average of 23 points per game a year ago.

Mora brings a fresh perspective to this team, and the invaluable experience of coaching big-time programs. He has the connections to build a competitive roster, and the coaching chops to bring this team to a level of respectability in the college football world. Nevertheless, rebuilding a program as devoid of talent as this one takes time.

UConn’s projected win total of 2.5 feels right on the money. Given their schedule, this team will struggle to win more than two games in 2022.

UConn vs Utah State Prediction

ESPN’s Power Football Index predicts the Huskies to be the absolute worst team in the country. In light of that and their schedule, UConn will find it tough to win more than two games in 2022. Instead of placing a wager on the Huskies, spend your hard-earned money somewhere else.

Having said that, this Week 0 matchup should provide plenty of fireworks. Both teams have question marks on the defensive side of the ball. Especially early in the season, look for the inexperienced secondaries on each side to give up a handful of explosive plays.

As they so often are, oddsmakers are far too low on the total for this one. Bet on the over 60.5 and enjoy the rest of your first college football Saturday.

Pick: Over 60.5 (-110)
