College football is a fickle mistress. One week, teams can look like world beaters, only for their championship hopes to be dashed away on an insignificant Saturday in October. As such, the National Championship odds change weekly.

Unfortunately, that may have been the case for the Alabama Crimson Tide as reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young left yesterday’s game with a shoulder injury. However, the early prognosis does looks good for the junior signal-caller. As head coach Nick Saban said, Young is “day to day” after the game.

Elsewhere, #1 Georgia managed to squeeze out a victory in Missouri. That being said. the Bulldogs looked vulnerable for the first time in 2022, and may have finally shown a chink in their armor.

Alabama’s Hopes Rest on Health of Young

Alabama’s season must have flashed before their eyes in northwest Arkansas on Saturday. That’s when reigning Heisman-winner Bryce Young – and current top-two favorite in the 2022 Heisman Trophy odds – fell awkwardly on his throwing shoulder and threw a wobbler on the next play. Young left the game in the second quarter with what Nick Saban called an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder.

In what should be a test for backup quarterback Jalen Milroe, Alabama hosts Texas A&M next Saturday at home in Tuscaloosa. Take into consideration, the Aggies upset Alabama last year in College Station.

Make no mistake this Crimson Tide team is still wildly talented. This squad still possesses 5 star recruits at nearly every position, and with the right amount of luck could make its way to the National Championship game. That being said, conquering the SEC and winning the National Championship gets a lot more precarious without Young.

Georgia Survives at Missouri

For nearly 56 minutes of football on Saturday, the Missouri Tigers sideline must have actually believed they were about to pull off the impossible. After looking like also-rans for most of the year, the Tigers had Georgia on the ropes all game.

Unfortunately for Mizzou, it all came apart in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. Georgia rallied to score the game-winning touchdown with just over four minutes to play.

Although the Bulldogs managed to pull out the victory last night, the rest of the SEC must be salivating to watch this game tape. For the first time this season, Kirby Smart’s team looked beatable. The red zone offense seems to be Georgia’s achilles heel.

While the Bulldogs are equipped with two of the top tight ends in the country in Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington, their offense has struggled to punch the ball in the endzone when inside the 20. Georgia entered Saturday ranked just 68th in the country at scoring touchdowns in the redzone, finding the pay-dirt just 65% of the time.

Other Week 5 National Championship Notes

It was business as usual for Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan squad in week 5. After five of the last six top 5 teams were beaten in Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium, the Wolverines maintained a patient, methodical approach to come away with the victory. Star running back Blake Corum continued his ascendancy, rushing for 133 yards and touchdown as Michigan blasted Iowa 27-14. At +2000 odds to win the National Championship, Michigan is firmly in the conversation.

In Pac-12 news, the Utah Utes continue to stake their claim as conference, and perhaps National Championship contenders. The Utes rolled over Oregon State 42-16 to bring their National Championship odds all the way down to +4000. This Utah team is a sneaky bet to win the title, as they possess much more talent than most believe.

Meanwhile, USC quarterback Caleb Williams continues to impress. The Oklahoma transfer lit up Arizona State on Saturday night, tossing for 348 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Although USC remains undefeated, Lincoln Riley’s men saw their National Championship odds drop from +1600 to +2000.
