Utah Cannot Get Caught Looking Ahead To Oregon

Utah has to watch itself on Saturday night. The Utes cannot afford to get caught looking ahead to Oregon. One of their biggest problems is the team has no margin for error. With one conference loss and two losses overall, any slip affects their slight chances of playing for the conference championship (+400 in the conference odds). The Ducks are just one week away and Utah did have a better showing last week versus Arizona. They beat them 45-20 and covered the spread.

Honestly, Utah just has to keep winning and match their home intensity on the road. First things first, they must take care of business against Stanford.

Now, Glover is far from the featured running back at Utah but he helps bolster a “running back by committee” approach that complements Cameron Rising and his passing exploits. Rising has over 2,000 yards passing and 301 yards rushing with 22 touchdowns (16 passing, six rushing). His other four running backs have combined for over 1,200 yards. Fortunately, there are many changes of pace when it comes to the Utah running attack.

The Utes’ 1-2 punch at wide receiver is solid. Dalton Kincaid and Devaughn Vele can create some matchup problems for a weakened Stanford secondary.

Also, Utah’s defense was good last week in a win over Arizona. Allowing 20 points to the Wildcats is impressive. Arizona normally scored 32 points a game.

The defense will again be at home and should be able to play downhill football. Utah figures to get the jump on Stanford much. Even with injuries to Glover and Jackson, the Utes can keep pounding it on the ground. At home, Utah is 4-1 and covered last week against the Wildcats.

Stanford Facing Second Half Uphill Battle

Head coach David Shaw keeps hoping his team can spring an upset somewhere but to no avail. Stanford is 3-6 on the season but just 1-6 in Pac-12 conference play. Some pundits believe they have one more winnable game against Cal and that is it.

Yes, Stanford is trying to keep this game close. The game is nationally televised on ESPN and in this case, a “moral victory” is almost a victory. Good showings can help with recruiting. The biggest problem for the Cardinal is their offense. Stanford is struggling and have not scored more than 17 points in four games now.

This game breaks down as such. Stanford must do something unexpected to keep the ball away from Utah. Their defense is not very good but marginally better than Arizona’s (38.9 points allowed per contest). Utah’s offensive and defensive lines should control the line of scrimmage with ease. That will allow Utah to control the game. Stanford will struggle to keep the game close.

Stanford’s preseason NCAAF win total of 4.5 might come down to that BYU game.

Utah vs Stanford Prediction

Most pundits have USC, Utah, and Oregon as the best three teams in the Pac-12. Utah’s toughest test will be next week in Eugene against Oregon.

Honestly, Utah’s defense will not be tested much.

Granted, Utah is laying 24 points and that seems like a lot, but they did win by 25 last week. That over looks tantalizingly close as well.

Picks: Utah -24 (-110), Over 53.5 (-110)
