Two teams with a rich playoff history meet when the San Francisco 49ers visit the Green Bay Packers at 8:15 p.m. ET Saturday in an NFC Divisional Playoff game at Lambeau Field.

The 49ers (10-7) upset the Dallas Cowboys 23-17 last Sunday on the road for their third straight win and fifth in six games. The Packers (13-4) had last weekend off with a bye as the reward for earning the top seed in the NFC. That came after Green Bay lost to the Lions 37-30 in Detroit in the meaningless regular-season finale.

Aaron Rodgers’ squad is a consensus 5.5-point favorite in a game that will be broadcast by Fox.

The Packers opened as five-point favorites and the line has gone up slightly. So has the total, which started at 47 points. 49ers Own Rodgers in Recent Playoff History

The 49ers and Packers will be meeting for the ninth time in the playoffs. That matches Cowboys-Rams for most frequent postseason matchup in NFL history.

San Francisco and Green Bay have split the eight games, though the 49ers have won the last three. Aaron Rodgers has been the Packers quarterback in all three losses, including the 2019 NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers rolled to a 37-20 victory in that game two years ago to reach the Super Bowl as Raheem Mostert rushed for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries while San Francisco threw just eight passes. Rodgers was 31 of 39 for 326 yards and two TDs but was intercepted twice.

Can the 49ers Offense Keep Rodgers Off the Field?

The 49ers are likely to try to play a ball-control offense and keep Rodgers off the field as much as possible. The strategy worked last week against the Cowboys and Dak Prescott when San Francisco rushed for 169 yards on 38 carries.

Rookie running back Elijah Mitchell racked up 27 carries and finished with 96 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was also utilized extensively in the running game and finished with 72 yards and a TD on 10 attempts.

Jimmy Garoppolo was just 16-of-25 passing for 172 yards with no scores and one interception. The Packers are 12th in the NFL against the run, allowing 109.1 yards a game. However, they are 31st in yards allowed per carry at 4.7, which could bode well for the explosive Samuel.

Rodgers-Adams Connection Powers Green Bay Offense

When the Packers edged the 49ers 30-28 in a regular season game Sept. 26, the combination of Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams wore the San Francisco defense out.

Adams has 12 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown. Rodgers threw for 261 yards and two TDs with no picks.

The Packers showed their quick-strike capability when they drove for Mason Crosby’s game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired. That came after the 49ers went ahead 28-27 with just 37 seconds left on Garoppolo’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk.

The 49ers, though, could pose a tough matchup for the Packers. San Francisco ranks third in the league in total defense.

49ers vs Packers Injury Report

Defensive end Nick Bosa (concussion) was listed as questionable for the 49ers on Thursday’s injury report along with cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) and defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle).

Bosa was a full participant in practice, though. So was Garoppolo, who is dealing with sprains of the right thumb and right shoulder.

Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back) is doubtful while cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) and offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) are questionable. Meanwhile, wide receiver Randall Cobb was activated from injured reserve Thursday.

Pick & Prediction for Green Bay vs San Francisco

The Packers have the better record, the better talent and home-field advantage. However, the 49ers have been Green Bay’s January nemesis and brought three seasons to an early end for Rodgers, who grew up rooting for San Francisco in Northern California.

Considering that history and how closely the teams played each other in the regular season, the 49ers are an enticing choice getting the points, especially on a cold night that could keep scoring down.

  • The Pick: 49ers +5.5 (-110)
