  • Arizona Cardinals Edge Rusher Chandler Jones burst onto the scene today after five sacks against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon.
  • How much of an impact did this effort have in Jones’ updated odds?
  • Odds for Chandler Jones beg the question does he still present value?

While Donald is the favorite again in NFL DPOY odds, Cleveland Browns’ defensive end Myles Garett is still the second choice. Garrett anchors one of the up-and-coming defenses in Cleveland.

That duo is followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt, but now Chandler Jones, behind his Sunday performance versus Tennessee has the same odds as Watt (+850).

Chandler Jones Not Much of a Thought

Going into this 2021 NFL season, most did not give Chandler Jones much of a glance even. The three-time pro bowl defensive end/linebacker came off a 2020 campaign where he played just five games due to injury. Few even knew what to expect from Jones.

Jones had a phenomenal 2019 where he racked up 19 sacks and eight forced fumbles. He was an absolute nightmare for offensive linemen everywhere. It just seemed like he got lost in the shuffle.

Maybe oddsmakers just thought at age 31, Jones was starting to approach the other side of his prime.

In short, they were wrong. They could not have been more wrong. Jones had +7000 odds, according to FanDuel, before his Week 1 performance against the Tennesee Titans (the tracker indicated a +4900) average.

Updated Odds for Chandler Jones After Week 1

Arizona created immense problems for the Tennessee Titans’ offensive line all afternoon as Tennessee managed just 13 points at home and just 248 yards of offense. Jones missed most of 2020 with a torn biceps. One would have never known it by how he diced through Tennessee’s offensive line and pretty much anyone in his way.

It is amazing to see that first quarter, but after last year’s performance in Seattle, few probably expected an encore quite like this in Tennessee. Basically, in an hour, Jones vaulted himself into the Defensive Player of the Year conversation.

Chandler Jones Big Odds Change

Again, Jones’ opening odds before Week 1 were +7000 along with a slew of players, and now they are at +850. Arizona does play in a tough division with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. Oh, the Seattle Seahawks are there as well.

Led by Chandler Jones, Arizona has done this before. While the team has been .500 or worse the past four seasons, Kyler Murray and the offense give a considerable amount of optimism to Arizona and their fans. If Jones and the defense keep playing as they did in Week 1, then lookout.

That 2019 season saw Jones tackle 53 players in all. It is the 2017 season that the Week 1 demolition derby reminded some of. That year, Chandler Jones had 17 sacks but a league-high 28 tackles for loss. Those 17 sacks also led the NFL. Jones will even bat a pass now and then as well. He did it five times in 2020.

This first game probably means Chandler Jones will take home defensive player of the week honors at the very least. If one is pondering, Arizona plays the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars the next two weeks. Jones may be able to add to his impressive stat line a little more.

The reality is few expected this, including myself, but maybe we should have. Jones is definitely one of those players we missed.

Does Chandler Jones Still Present Value?

There is going to be a good deal of buzz to see if Jones can keep this up. His schedule is pretty favorable given Arizona has a third-place schedule. If the edge rusher can stay healthy, there is little reason why he won’t stay up near the top of the odds for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Simply, he is back, and yes he still has value even at +850.
