The NFL world is still buzzing about the Ravens decision to back out of the Maxx Crosby trade and sign Trey Hendrickson instead. Both players are coming off injuries, but ultimately Baltimore felt better about Hendrickson’s immediate health and his ability to be a game wrecker in 2026.

Hendrickson may have been on the field less than Crosby in 2025, but he did finish with a higher pressure rate. In fact, Hendrickson has posted a higher pressure rate than Crosby in four straight seasons, recording 13 more sacks over the course of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns.

I would contest that Crosby is a better player than Hendrickson and a more likely NFL DPOY odds contender, due to the amount of snaps he plays and his ability to stop the run, but that’s not what I’m betting. I’m wagering on Hendrickson to record more sacks, which I believe is a slam dunk for a few reasons.

Let’s start with the advanced numbers. Hendrickson has earned a 90.0+ pass rush grade at PFF in three straight seasons, with a pass rush win rate of 20% or higher each year. Crosby on the other hand, has topped a PFF pass rush grade of 85.0 just once in his career, and hasn’t posted a pass rush win rate of at least 20% since 2023.

The talent around Hendrickson is also greater, boosting his sack total ceiling. Baltimore’s NFL win totals is much higher than Las Vegas’, and Hendrickson will be surrounded by talented pass rushers Nnamdi Madubuike and Mike Green. Those two have to be accounted for by opposing defenses, and will take at least some of the attention away from Hendrickson on pure passing downs.

Crosby meanwhile, saw his Raiders spend a ton of money in free agency, but that hardly made a dent in their Super Bowl odds. The only pass rusher Las Vegas added in attempt to bolster a defense than ranked bottom-six in pressure rate was Kwity Paye, and he’s fresh off an underwhelming 4 sack campaign.

Then there’s the injury history. There are no concerns about Hendrickson coming off his hip surgery, while there were enough red flags with Crosby’s medicals to prompt the Ravens to back out of their trade. If those concerns are valid, Crosby is likely at a higher risk or re-injury, which makes him more likely not to play a full 17 games.

Another reason Crosby could wind up short of a full season, is if the Raiders have a repeat of 2025. Las Vegas sat Crosby down later in the year, along with other starters, in effort to lock up a top draft pick. Given the Raiders have some of the longest NFL odds to make the playoffs, a repeat of that strategy is in play.

Baltimore on the other hand, has Super Bowl aspirations, and are one of the biggest NFL division odds favorites. Their defense significantly underachieved in 2025 in sacks and pressure rate, and they’re going to need Hendrickson on the field as much as possible to fix those issues.
