  • Brian Flores is the favorite to be the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders
  • Pete Carroll was one-and-done in Vegas after a 3-14 season, finishing last in the AFC West

It was one-and-done for Pete Carroll in Las Vegas.

Now, Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores is pegged as the betting favorite to land the job, the sixth person who will hold that mantle since 2021.

General manager John Spytek and minority owner (and FOX broadcaster) Tom Brady are spearheading the search to try and pull the Raiders out of the abyss in the AFC West.

Let’s look at all the candidates and check out my best bets below.

Flores, who was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins and turned their fortunes around, has the shortest odds at +125. From there, it’s a bunch of alphabet soup — coaches who have been mentioned in multiple job searches across the NFL.

That includes Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, the current betting favorite to land the Cleveland Browns head coaching job. Arizona offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is also in the mix, with both at +800 odds.

Robert Saleh and Mike McCarthy are at +1000 odds each, while Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula is at +1200 odds, along with Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken.

Hard-Nosed Flores Top Candidate for Raiders Coaching Job

There are plenty of reasons Flores would be considered, which includes his longtime work within the Patriots’ organization when Tom Brady was around. He started as a scouting assistant in 2004 before working his way up to defensive coordinator in 2018.

Along the way, he was part of four title-winning teams.

He landed with the Dolphins in 2019, and after a rough 5-11 start, he rolled took Miami to back-to-back winning seasons.

Las Vegas already has a cornerstone to build on with edge rusher Maxx Crosby, which gives them a chance to build out that defense in both the draft and free agency.

This hire would make sense if the Raiders were going to keep embattled QB Geno Smith as starter. Flores has had to work his way back to a lead candidate after stories emerged about the way he handled young QB Tua Tagovailoa in Miami.

The Raiders have the no. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. Flores is going to have to prove he can build a winning culture and develop their franchise pivot without rattling his confidence.

They could also use his defensive mind – long considered one of the best in the NFL. Las Vegas lost by double digits nine times this season.

With Patrick Mahomes in KC, Justin Herbert in LA and Bo Nix and Sean Payton in Denver, the defense is going to have to be able to hold its own.

Prediction on the Las Vegas Raiders Next Head Coach

There’s a reason that five of the top eight candidates have cut their teeth on the offensive side, as the Raiders tallied fewer than 10 points five times this season, and ranked dead last in scoring at 14.2 points per game.

This is a position that should be appealing to most head coaches: on top of the no. 1 pick, the Raiders have over $110 million in cap space, and the offense already has young stars in tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty.

Assuming Brady and company make the right pick at QB, the Raiders’ turnaround could be swift. Kingsbury (+800) has been a part of that turnaround in Washington, crafting a simple but dynamic offense around Jayden Daniels that went all the way to the NFC Championship in Year 1.

Klint Kubiak (+800) coaxed a stellar follow-up year to one-time castoff Sam Darnold. After his career year in Minnesota, Darnold helmed the no. 3 scoring offense in the NFL and helped Seattle earn the top seed in the NFC.

Here’s hoping the Raiders understand the assignment here. Veteran coaching retreads aren’t the answer here, from Mike McCarthy (+1000) to Bill Belichick (+1600) to long shots like Jon Gruden and Doug Pederson (+4000 each).

The next coach is going to have to steer this franchise out of the darkness and into respectability in one of football’s premier conferences. While Kubiak or Kingsbury could lift the offense, Flores feels like he carries that hard-nosed demeanour of past Raiders’ franchises. He’ll need a Grade A offensive coordinator, but he can turn the franchise around quickly.
