NFL Week 14 upset picks: Can Jets Defense Rise to the Occasion?

The New York Jets find themselves in somewhat unfamiliar territory entering Week 14. One of the big surprises of the current campaign, the Jets’ long-expected collapse has not materialized. Indeed, the New York defense has emerged as one of the league’s stingiest, allowing just 15.8 points per game over their past nine.

That run includes a stunning 20-17 home win over the Buffalo Bills last month while pegged as 10.5-point underdogs in the NFL odds. And on Sunday, they will have the opportunity to sweep their season series with the Bills for the first time since 2011 when they visit Highmark Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The conditions could be just right for another big day for the Jets. In addition to continued concerns over the fitness of Buffalo pivot Josh Allen, who has been nursing an elbow injury, the Bills face injury woes on their offensive line, with the status of both Reggie Gilliam and Dion Dawkins in question. Combine that with a game time forecast calling for rain and temperatures just above freezing, and the Jets suddenly emerge as an intriguing pick to claim their second straight win over Buffalo, and fourth straight ATS win as double-digit underdogs.

Buccaneers Poised to End Road Slide in San Francisco

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have maintained a flair for the dramatic during their current 3-1 SU run, with two of those wins coming in the dying seconds and their lone loss coming in overtime. While that may make sports bettors nervous, it should not discourage them from making a value wager this weekend as 3.5-point underdogs.

The Buccaneers have yet to show flashes of their previously vaunted attack, averaging just 17 points per game during their current 3-1 run. But in addition to the late-game heroics provided by Tom Brady, the Bucs have also benefited from a stout defense, particularly against the rush, limiting opposing rushers to fewer than 80 yards on three occasions and allowing just one total scoring run.

That is bad news for the 49ers, whose formidable ground game has produced an average of over 124 yards per game over their past seven outings. However, with the Niners offense now in the hands of rookie Brock Purdy, and their list of walking wounded include Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, and Hassan Ridgeway, the Bucs are well positioned to once again eke out the victory in a low-scoring contest.

Quarterback Injuries Hobble Dolphins Ahead of Date in LA

This week’s Sunday Night Football was originally billed as a clash of rising star quarterbacks, with Tua Tagovailoa’s Miami Dolphins visiting Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers. However, with both Tua and veteran back Teddy Bridgewater both battling injuries, opportunity knocks for Herbert and the Chargers to snap a six-game slide as home underdogs.

Set to hit the gridiron as 3-point home dogs, still face some nagging injury woes of their own, most notably offensive lineman Trey Pipkins and safety Derwin James. This team has also lost three of four at home while allowing 30 or more points three times.

However, those concerns could diminish dramatically depending on the fitness of Tagovailoa, who has been removed from the injury report despite being limited by an ankle injury during practice this week. The Dolphins have lost four straight with Tua sidelined, and while he may be under center on Sunday night, he will face a huge challenge to keep pace with Justin Herbert, who finally enjoys the benefit of a healthy receiving corps.
