Well, the good news is, no NFL team has suffered a catastrophic injury at the QB position through three weeks.

Not so great news if you’re 2015 MVP Cam Newton. The 32-year-old remains unsigned after being released by the Patriots late in training camp.

Much like at that point, there were some possibilities but nothing seemed firm, and that’s where it’s stayed.

Currently, the sinking ships that are the Washington Football Team and the Houston Texans present Newton’s best options back to the NFL.

Let’s run down the best chances of Cam once again cooking for an NFL team this season.

Can Cam Play?

This is perhaps the biggest question surrounding Newton, as he’s been pretty dinged up and said last year was the first time in years his throwing shoulder was healthy.

Still, his season was marred by testing positive for COVID, while playing through arm and abdomen injuries during the year.

Newton stayed available however, missing just one game all season. He threw for 2,657 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions while learning a new system in his first year with New England. He was every bit the dual threat that’s in vogue in the NFL these days too. Cam ran for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns — the second highest total of his career.

While he may not be able to carry teams at an elite QB level, there’s little doubt Newton can still play in this league. Given the proper system, he may still be able to flourish.

For his part, he’s still posting workout videos and looks intent to return to the pros.

“And in life, sometimes things don’t go as planned. So what you wanna do? What you gonna do — cry? No. You gotta use it,” he in a recent Instagram post.

Will WFT Upgrade?

Ron Rivera — Newton’s head coach for a number of years, including their Super Bowl run in Carolina — has to be at least considering this option.

Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a hip injury in Week 1, and Taylor Heinicke hasn’t been great in relief, a MNF win over the lowly Giants his only shining moment.

The result is an 1-2 start and an offense — with some of the best skill players in the NFL — that sits 7th-worst with just 683 yards passing and five touchdowns. They are also tied for 28th in pass plays covering 20+ yards.

Backup Kyle Allen doesn’t appear to be the answer, and waiting for Fitz to get back and up to speed may be too long to stay in the NFC East race.

Houston Has a Problem

Here’s the thing about the Texans: apart from their QB situation — which is all kinds of awful since Tyrod Taylor went down — they are a decent football team with veteran players. At 1-2, they’re in the mix in a weak AFC South, and an upgrade at pivot could work wonders.

Davis Mills has tried his best to spell an injured Taylor, who pulled his hammy in a loss to the Browns in Week 2, but he doesn’t appear ready for this stage.

He was overwhelmed by a legitimately solid Panthers’ defense, which held them him to 168 yards passing on 28 attempts in a 24-9 loss on Thursday night. In 46 attempts on the year, Mills hasn’t eclipsed six yards per pass attempt in two appearances.

Wishful Thinking

One fan base that must be begging for some action are the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have witnessed the Ben Roethlisberger QB experience fall off the rails hard.

Big Ben’s numbers look decent: 801 yards passing, three TD’s and three INT’s, but save for a few shots against a confused Raiders’ secondary, there are an awful lot of defenses daring him to throw deep, and he’s not biting. The Steelers currently rank 25th with a sparse 6.2 yards per pass attempt.

With a less-than-dominant offensive line, the 39-year-old can’t improvise or elude the pass rush, which is too bad, because the Steelers boast some weapons.

Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins are the other options, but Mike Tomlin probably believes Roethlisberger is still his best chance to win games.

What’s the Best Bet?

Maybe the situation in Miami may warrant a look at Cam, but they’re in a division where the Bills should run away with it, so Brian Flores seems intent on holding the fort with Jacoby Brissett while awaiting the return of Tua Tagovailoa.

If you needed to make a wager today, I’d lean towards Washington, and the reunion with Ron Rivera, who’s always had great things to say about Newton.

However, I don’t see this situation sorting itself out until after Week 4, when injuries can always change course. Or, in the case of the team’s above, if losses continue to mount.

The pick: WFT (+450)
