Odds on Where Cam Newton Will Play in 2021 – Washington Favored, Denver a Top Contender

The Washington Football Team have emerged as the early frontrunners in the odds to be Cam Newton’s next destination, perched as +110 favorites. However, the Football Team are not alone as potential suitors for Newton. Here’s a look at all the odds on where Newton will land, and the factors that could determine the next step in his NFL career.

Newton Fails to Rebound in New England

After being limited to just two appearances with Carolina in 2019, Newton hoped to revitalize his career with the Patriots this season, but his underwhelming results make it unlikely he will be back. Newton enjoyed a moderately successful debut before being forced to miss a Week 4 matchup in Kansas City due to COVID-19, connecting on two TD passes and running for four total scores while leading New England to a 2-1 SU start.

While his steady early-season performance made him an early NFL Comeback Player of the Year favorite, Newton proved to be largely ineffective as a passer upon his return, going four straight games without a TD pass, and tossing just eight total TDs against 10 picks on the season.

To his credit, Newton closed out the season on a strong note, tossing for three scores and racking up a season-best 79 rushing yards in New England’s win over the hapless New York Jets in Week 17. But considering the options available to NFL teams seeking a veteran upgrade under center, Newton may have a tough time finding a good fit.

Expect Rivera to Pass, Again

It is Newton’s relationship with his former coach Ron Rivera that has lifted Washington to the top of the odds. The duo enjoyed their greatest success together during the Carolina Panthers’ march to a Super Bowl berth six years ago, and Rivera has publicly praised his former franchise quarterback.

That also made WFT the favorites to sign Newton last spring. However, Rivera elected to pass, opting instead to acquire Kyle Allen from Carolina to backup Dwayne Haskins. The Haskins experiment in Washington proved to be an epic bust, but veteran passer Alex Smith has been something in his return from injury that Newton was not in New England – transformative. Without his steady hand at the helm, Washington likely doesn’t make the playoffs. And a win this weekend over Tampa Bay, engineered by Smith, likely paves the way for the 36-year-old to return next season and mentor Allen.

Broncos at a Crossroads

There is no shortage of potential suitors, with the Denver Broncos sitting second to Washington as a +350 bet, just ahead of the Chicago Bears at +375, and the Indianapolis Colts at +600.

Following yet another losing season, the Broncos find themselves at a crossroads under center. Second-year passer Drew Lock struggled at times, on and off the field, and did himself no favors by violating COVID-19 guidelines that forced him to miss one game. Overall, Lock tossed for 16 scores against 15 picks, but may have saved his job with steady play in the wake of the Week 12 COVID debacle, tossing for nine scores against four picks in five December outings.

Trubisky, Rivers Poised to Compete for Top Jobs

The impending free-agent status of Mitch Trubisky and Philip Rivers has powered the Bears’ and Colts’ odds. The two passers also represent two obstacles in the way of Newton’s next job. And like with Smith in Washington, playoff performances could impact both how much Trubisky and Rivers can command as free agents, and the buying decisions of both Indianapolis and the Bears, who have been previously connected to Newton.

The Patriots remain in the hunt as a +800 bet to retain Newton’s services, while the San Francisco 49ers trail as +1100 longshots. Considering that Newton led the Patriots to their first losing season in 20 years while producing dismal passing numbers, it is tough seeing him back in New England. And while there has been talk of the Niners moving on from oft-injured Jimmy Garoppolo, it is tough to see how Newton would be an upgrade.

Considering the free agents and star rookies he will have to compete with in the offseason job market, Newton looks likely to sit and wait once again, before finally accepting a backup role. That makes Denver a solid value bet to bring on Newton to push Lock during a last chance season for both pivots.
