  • Last season, the Cubs knocked out San Diego after a three-game Wild Card series

On September 29 at 10:00 PM ET, the San Diego Padres (91-71, 51-30 home) host the Chicago Cubs (89-73, 43-38 the road) at Petco Park on September 29 at 10:00 pm ET to kick off Game 1 of the 2026 National League Wild Card Series, broadcast nationally on NBCSN and Peacock.

San Diego earned the right to host the best-of-three series behind a dominant 51-30 mark at home, while Chicago countered with a solid 43-38 road campaign.

Although the Cubs took five of six regular-season meetings against San Diego, the Padres enter the postseason opener as slight betting favorites (-125) behind right-hander Michael King (12-10, 3.21 ERA, 1.18 WHIP). The Cubs will roll with lefty Matthew Boyd.

With both clubs riding strong regular seasons into October, Game 1 sets the stage for a high-stakes pitching and tactical duel in Southern California.

Cubs vs Padres Predictions and Best Bets

I am targeting specific statistical extremes for my sports betting picks in this contest.

Moneyline Pick: San Diego Padres (55¢ at Polymarket)

Padres to Win
55%

Starting with the outright winner, backing the Padres at 55¢ offers tremendous value on home turf. San Diego was one of the league’s hottest clubs down the stretch, closing out the regular season by winning 17 of their final 20 games (85.0%), including an 8-2 surge over their last 10 contests.

That red-hot form is supported by an imposing 51-30 (.630) home record at Petco Park throughout 2026. Conversely, the Cubs stumbled into the postseason with an 9-11 mark over their last 20 games and face a difficult environment away from Wrigley Field. Because of this massive disparity in late-season momentum and home-field strength, I am backing San Diego to take Game 1 outright.

Run Total Pick: Under 7.5 Runs (55¢ at Kalshi)

Prediction Markets

Kalshi
Under 7.5 Runs
55%

For the total, the starting pitching and venue splits strongly point to a pitcher-dominated script. Padres starter Michael King has been electric at Petco Park, logging a 2.74 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and holding opposing batters to a .212 average across 15 home starts. Games started by King in San Diego averaged just 6.00 total runs this season, with 12 of those 15 starts (80.0%) staying Under 7.5 runs.

When factoring in Petco Park’s run-suppressing environment, October cooler night air, and high-leverage playoff bullpens shortening games, playing the Under 7.5 at 55¢ is mathematically sound and fades public action expecting offensive fireworks.

Top Player Prop: Michael Busch 1+ Hit (57¢ at Kalshi)

Kalshi
Busch 1+ Hit
57%

Isolating the MLB player props markets, I am targeting Michael Busch to record a base hit. Busch has found his rhythm at the plate away from Chicago, logging at least one hit and eclipsing his total bases mark in four of his last five road games (80.0% conversion rate) with two multi-hit performances and two extra-base hits in that span.

For the season, Busch cleared 1+ hits in 102 of 160 games (63.8%), which significantly outpaces the 57.0% implied probability of his 57¢ share on Kalshi. Backing Busch to notch a knock is the premier prop on the board

Team Statistics Comparison and Betting Splits

To identify the edges in this matchup, I analyzed both teams in their current situational splits. The table below compares the teams’ offensive metrics.

StatPadres (Home)Cubs (Away)
Runs Per Game4.265.26
Batting Average.240.247
OPS.704.747
Stolen Bases Per Game1.050.78
Team ERA4.004.12
WHIP1.291.26
Ks Per 98.247.84

Note: Offensive splits reflect the Padres’ home statistics and the Cubs’ road statistics. Pitching stats (ERA, WHIP, Ks Per 9) are overall season figures.

The most glaring mismatch is Chicago’s road run production. The Cubs average 5.26 runs per game away from home. They outpace a Padres offense that produces 4.26 runs per game in front of its home crowd. Chicago also holds slight advantages in batting average and OPS within these specific splits.

The Padres edge the Cubs in home base-stealing (1.05 per game) over the Cubs on the road.

Betting Splits

In the betting markets, 77.4% of the moneyline stake sits on the Padres. The run line data shows 74.3% of the money backing San Diego. The public expects a high-scoring environment, placing 81.8% of the money on the Over.

Probable Pitchers: Michael King vs Matthew Boyd

The Padres will hand the ball to right-hander Michael King. The Cubs will look in Matthew Boyd’s direction.

King holds a 3.21 ERA and an impressive 1.18 WHIP. Over his last 10 appearances, he pitched 59.2 innings with a 2.87 ERA and a 7.54 K/9 rate. Because of his consistency, I recommend backing King to record 5+ strikeouts (55¢ at Kalshi).

Boyd missed about 10 starts but still put together a solid season. He posted a sub-4.00 ERA for the third season in a row and surpassed batters to a .680 OPS. Boyd feasts on soft contact, allowing a 37.6% hard-hit rate with a 42.1% groundball rate.

Alex Bregman boasts a staggering .875 average on seven hits across eight career at-bats against King. Conversely, Michael Conforto presents a strong fade candidate, managing just a .091 average over 11 at-bats.

For San Diego, Fernando Tatis Jr and Manny Machado have both thrived against Gausman. Each holds an average above .330 with two home runs. Jake Cronenworth has struggled, logging six strikeouts and a .105 average in 19 at-bats.
