  • Odell Beckham Jr. had seven catches for 71 yards in Week 1
  • Beckham got a lot of attention for wearing a $350,000 Richard Mille watch in Sunday’s game
  • Beckham intends to keep wearing a watch even though the NFL says they’ll address him and the Cleveland Browns

For the most part, Odell Beckham Jr. had an inconspicuous start to the 2019 NFL season. He finished with just seven catches for 71 touchdown-less yards as the Cleveland Browns were stomped 43-13 in their opener.

However, he wore a watch that caught everyone’s eye and now there’s speculation that he’ll do it again in Week 2 when the Browns visit the Jets on Monday Night Football (Sep. 16th, 8:15 PM ET).

Browns Get Crushed, Beckham’s Antics Begin

The Browns were one of the most heavily hyped teams in the offseason but that came to a crashing halt in Week 1 when the Tennessee Titans came to town and crushed them, 43-13. The Browns passing game was in disarray as quarterback Baker Mayfield threw three interceptions – one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Beckham Jr. was mostly a non-factor as he made a number of non-descript catches to compile his 71 yards. However, what he is now best known from that performance is wearing a $350,000 Richard Mille watch on the field. Of course, it’s not like he needs to keep track of the time during the game, so it’s mostly just a move for show.

Browns Getting A Taste Of Beckham’s Behavior

There’s no question that the Beckham wore out his welcome with the New York Giants staff because of the accumulation of a number of issues and it feels like this is the start with Beckham. Remember, he decided not to come to voluntary camps in the offseason. It’s not a big deal but it did force the team to answer a lot of questions while he was gone.

It’s the same situation here. Although it’s not a really major issue, Beckham knows that he’ll get attention for these types of fashion shows and it’s going to distract the team a little bit. Head Coach Freddie Kitchens doesn’t want to be answering questions about Beckham’s watch. He’d rather be answering questions about his touchdowns.

At the end of the day, Beckham is not Antonio Brown but he’s also not Julio Jones. Jones is a model citizen who quietly goes about his business. There’s always going to be a little something extra from Beckham and we’re already seeing it in Week 1.

Beckham Plans To Keep Wearing The Watch

Although it’s clearly a rules violation and the league will speak to Beckham and the Browns about it, it appears as though he plans to continue wearing the watch. Beckham has made it clear that he wants the focus (related to him) to be about football, but by wearing this ridiculous watch, he’s creating a bit of a distraction.

It’s an odd approach for a player who is trying to solely focus on his game. For the Browns, it’s just another headline that doesn’t relate to actual football or them winning games. The worst part is it is so easily avoidable.

What’s The Best Bet?

I expect Beckham Jr. to wear a watch in Week 2. Whether it’s something not as lavish or the same one, he’s going to do what he wants to do, because that’s him. And it appears that whether he’s fined or not, or whether the league addresses this or not, he’s going to do what he wants.

It’s not a good look but he’s playing on Monday Night Football this week and you know he loves the spotlight. Bet on him to have some kind of watch on his wrist.
