Coming off a 4-12 campaign in 2018, their fourth successive losing season, a year ago no one was putting the San Francisco 49ers in any 2020 Super Bowl matchup scenarios.

Anyone who played a Kansas City Chiefs-49ers showdown via an exact Super Bowl matchup wager last season ended up laughing all the way to the bank. You could have landed odds around 60-1 on that outcome.

The reigning champion Chiefs are again favored to be 50% of the Super Bowl equation in 2021. In fact, the top three pairings in the Super Bowl exact matchup all include Kansas City as the AFC representative in the odds to make Super Bowl 55.

The Chiefs vs the New Orleans Saints is the Super Bowl 55 exact matchup chalk at +2500.

Don’t Bet On The Niners

Before getting down to potential matchups worth considering for a wager, a word of advice – don’t include the 49ers in any scenario. History shows that’s akin to making a donation to the sportsbook.

Since they began playing the Super Bowl in 1967, there’s only been one occasion where an NFC team lost the Super Bowl game and made it back the following season. That was the Dallas Cowboys. They were beaten 16-13 by the Baltimore Colts in the 1971 Super Bowl. They defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in the 1972 Super Bowl.

Two items of note to consider here. Firstly, the Colts no longer reside in Baltimore. And secondly, that scenario played out nearly 50 years ago.

Do you really want to mess with that kind of karma?

Could The Chiefs Do It Again?

Sure they could. There’s been plenty of repeat Super Bowl champs over the years. There’s also been lots of teams who’ve gone back to the big game and lost the year after winning it. It’s been done twice since 2014.

Then again, it took the Chiefs 50 years to get back to the Super Bowl after winning in 1970. Now you’re willing to wager that they can do it again in 52 weeks?

A Sleeper Pairing To Consider

Is it finally time for the AFC East to change hands? The title has belonged to the New England Patriots since 2009. But Tom Brady is gone, and the Buffalo Bills look ready to ascend to the throne.

Adding Stefon Diggs gives Josh Allen another target in Buffalo. The Bills already field a stellar defense.

A Bills-New Orleans Saints Super Bowl matchup at +6600 offers a tasty price.

The Network Dream Matchup

This season’s Super Bowl is slated for Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium. CBS will carry the broadcast and you just know the Tiffany Network wants the home team to be representing the NFC.

That would put Brady in his 10th Super Bowl but his first with a team other than the Patriots. So who better to provide the opposition for this one than Bill Belichick and the Pats?

And The Winner Is . . .

The Baltimore Ravens met heartbreak last year during the NFL postseason. The Saints have endured an up close and personal relationship with the broken hearts club for three successive playoff years.

It’s time to heal all those wounds. The Saints are going to face the Ravens in the 2021 Super Bowl game.

It took Patrick Mahomes a year of playoff heartache before he got over the hump. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who followed Mahomes as NFL MVP, will now follow him to the big game as the AFC representative.

On the other side, Saints QB Drew Brees is ready to show Brady that he’s not the only 40-something who can lead his team to Super Bowl glory.

Pick: New Orleans Saints-Baltimore Ravens (+3000).
