The Green Bay Packers will attempt to stay atop the NFC standings when they host the Carolina Panthers at 8:15 PM EST Saturday at Lambeau Field.

The Packers and Saints are tied for the top record in the conference at 10-3, but Green Bay holds the tiebreaker because it beat the Saints in Week 3. The Packers are favored to continue their winning ways against the Panthers (4-9).

Plenty to Play For

Getting the top seed in the NFC should certainly motivate Aaron Rodgers and the Packers not to take the Panthers lightly.

The No. 1 seed would benefit Green Bay in a couple of ways.

One, because of this season’s expanded playoffs, Green Bay would get the lone bye in the NFC playoffs and need two to win just two games to win the Super Bowl.

Secondly, the Packers would have home-field advantage in both games. Few opponents would relish visiting frigid Lambeau Field in January.

The Packers played in the NFC Championship Game four times in the last 10 seasons. However, all were on the road, and the Packers lost the last three, including last season to the San Francisco 49ers.

Third MVP for Rodgers?

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is gaining support for his third NFL MVP as he is having one of the best seasons of his 16-year career.

Rodgers has thrown an NFL-best 39 touchdown passes while also leading the league in passer rating (119.7) and yards per attempt (9.6). He has a 69.6 completion percentage, 3,685 passing yards, and has been intercepted just four times.

Wide receiver Davante Adams is also having a year worthy of All-Pro consideration.

Despite missing two games early in the season with a hamstring injury, Adams’ 14 touchdown catches are tied for the NFL lead with the Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill. Adams has 91 receptions for 1,144 yards.

The Panthers’ pass defense has been vulnerable recently. Carolina gave up 280 yards to the Denver Broncos’ Drew Lock last week and 287 yards to the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins the week before.

Carolina’s Close Calls

Three of the Panthers’ last four losses have been by a total of eight points, including dropping a 32-27 decision at home to the Broncos last week.

In seven of Carolina’s nine losses, it has had the ball late in the fourth quarter or overtime with a chance to win. The inability to rally the Panthers has the fans and media putting heat on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater is a full-time starter for the first time since 2015 with the Vikings before he suffered a severe knee injury. He has completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 3,102 yards and 14 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Injury/Weather Report

Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey (thigh) along with guard Dennis Daley (concussion) is also doubtful.

McCaffrey has been limited to three games this season. A year ago, he was an All-Pro when rushing for 1,387 yards and adding 1,005 yards receiving.

Packers guard Simon Stepaniak (knee) and tight end Jace Sternberger (concussion) will not play.

The weather report Saturday night calls for mostly cloudy a low of 27 degrees, and no precipitation.

About Last Year

The teams met last season in Green Bay, and the Packers won 24-16 as five-point favorites.

Adams had seven receptions for 118 yards to lead the way. Rodgers finished 233 passing yards while Aaron Jones (93) and Jamaal Williams (63) combined for 156 yards on the ground.

The Packers did have problems with Panthers receiver D.J. Moore, who had nine catches for 120 yards.

Look for the Packers to cover the spread again in this year’s rematch as the Rodgers-Adams combination proves too much for the Panthers.

The Pick: Packers -7.5 (-110)
