  • The odds of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year have shortened to +2000
  • He was at +6500 entering Week 4 of the NFL season
  • With five interceptions, Diggs already has more than all but one NFL team other than Dallas

Trevon Diggs has already made Dallas Cowboys history, and he’s on pace to create more history-making moments.

The Cowboys cornerback has intercepted a pass in every game of the 2021 NFL season. In the long and storied legacy of the franchise, no player had done that since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

Oddsmakers are taking notice. The betting line on Diggs in the NFL DPOY odds shortened to +2000.

Cowboys’ Diggs Is Picking and Grinning

In Sunday’s 36-28 win over the Carolina Panthers, Diggs intercepted Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold twice. That gives him five picks on the season.

Diggs has more interceptions this season than every NFL team except the Cowboys (10), New Orleans Saints (7) and Buffalo Bills (7). The Cowboys cornerback alone has more takeaways this season than all but 10 NFL teams.

Diggs is representative of what has been a very opportunistic Dallas defense. Only the Bills (11) have made more takeaways than the Cowboys (10).

Sunday marked the eighth successive game which saw Dallas causing multiple turnovers. That’s the longest active streak of 2+ takeaways in the NFL.

Diggs On Pace to Bring Down Walls

In 1981, Everson Walls was a rookie defensive back with the Cowboys. NFL teams tend to pick on rookie DBs but it turned out to be Walls who was doing the picking.

He intercepted 11 passes that season, leading the NFL. Walls also set a new Cowboys franchise record for picks. It’s never been bettered. That was one of three times during his NFL career that Walls led the league in interceptions. Prior to Diggs, Walls was the first Cowboys’ DB during the Super Bowl era with interceptions in each of the first three games of a season. He did that in 1985.

Diggs is on track to knock down Walls’ record and like Bon Jovi, he’s already almost halfway there. At his current pace, Diggs would be finishing with 22 interceptions. That would indeed be history-making. Dick “Night Train” Lane picked off an NFL-record 14 passes for the 1952 Los Angeles Rams.

Cornering the Market

Secondary players own the fewest NFL DPOY awards of any defensive position on the field. It generally takes the type of campaign similar to the one Diggs is fashioning to make it happen.

Cornerback Stephen Gilmore of the New England Patriots was the 2019 NFL DPOY. Gilmore finished that season with 53 tackles, 20 passes defended, and a league-leading six interceptions. He returned two of them for touchdowns.

In 2009, Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson was the NFL DPOY. He finished that season with nine interceptions, three pick-sixes and four forced fumbles.

Along with Charles Woodson, every cornerback who’s been named NFL DPOY – Mel Blount (1975), Lester Hayes (1980), Rod Woodson (1993) and Deion Sanders (1994) – won by being big playmakers. Blount (11) and Hayes (13) both led the NFL in interceptions. Sanders led the league in interception return yardage (303) and pick-sixes (three). Rod Woodson picked off a career-high eight passes in his winning year.

Diggs is on pace to garner some spectacular achievements this season. The fact that he’s covering the other team’s best receiver will make it difficult for teams to avoid throwing in Diggs’ area.

Still, it’s a hard award for a DB to win. If you’re going to bet Diggs, wager a small stipend. History and the odds are stacked against him.
