For grizzled veterans, the NFL preseason doesn’t mean much.

But for the incoming rookie class? It’s everything.

There will undoubtedly be surprises along the way in the race to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. Like a late round selection or undrafted free agent winning a regular season job. But for the most part we pay attention to the first rounders and premier picks in the preseason.

Like Micah Parsons, who has already made his presence felt on the Dallas defense.

Odds as of August 21st at DraftKings

Since they opened, the Cowboys first rounder has owned top spot when it comes to the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year odds. He’s started to come back to the pack, however.

After opening at +400, Parsons sat at +583 on our tracker entering Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Meanwhile the August 16 update was the first time Jamin Davis was better than fourth on the odds.

A small, but solid, move for the linebacker.

Davis Chasing Down Top Spot

From a statistical perspective, Jamin Davis was actually better in Week 1 than he was in Week 2. Davis notched a solo tackle against the Patriots, and assisted on three others.

But stats don’t always tell the whole story, as Pro Football Focus handed him a 31.5 grade in his debut. Mark Bullock described the rookie as looking like he was ‘thinking instead of playing’.

Fast forward a week, and despite logging just two tackles, Davis flew up the board.

After looking passive in his reads and struggling to shed blocks against the Pats, PFF noted that Davis was much more decisive against the Bengals.

One of the knocks on Davis in the pre-draft process was his inexperience. So it’s possible that he was battling some jitters in the opener. And if so, things could be looking up for the 19th overall pick.

Opportunity Knocks for Owusu-Koramoah

Sticking with linebackers, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made a massive impact in Week 1 for the Browns. He logged seven tackles, three for a loss, and added a sack. But bad news for a fellow Cleveland linebacker this week means more of an opportunity for the second rounder.

On Thursday it was revealed that second-year linebacker Jacob Phillips tore his bicep. The injury is likely season-ending. That means that there’s an opening ahead of Owusu-Koramoah on the depth chart and an opportunity to start.

JOK was already off to a solid start anyhow. Along with a strong showing statistically, he was a presence sideline-to-sideline against the Jaguars.

It’ll also be good news for his DROY odds, which have taken a hit since draft night. Opening at +700 and second on the board, the Butkus Award winner sat sixth at +1200 earlier this week.

Surtain’s Odds on the Rise

One player who has risen to the occasion so far in the preseason is Patrick Surtain II.

In Week 1 he was flawless, pitching a shutout against the Vikings and capping it off with a pick-six. Thanks to that debut, he saw a slight bounce-back in his DROY odds, which had been fading ever-so slightly.

Against the Seahawks, he only allowed a 12-yard completion to Aaron Fuller.

Denver was ecstatic that Surtain made it to them at the draft back in April. All he’s done since that day is show why.

JOK for DROY?

Jamin Davis bounced back in a big way in Week 2, and despite that initial dip, you may not be able to get him at a better price.

But for as good as he was, it’s tough to overlook the talent, and opportunity, for Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Provided he shows well and finishes healthy against the Giants, JOK has a prime opportunity for playing time. The Browns will be playing under a bigger spotlight than ever, and people are paying a lot of attention to their defense. If Owusu-Koramoah can step seamlessly into that lineup and stick, he could be a worthwhile investment.

The Pick: Jeremia Owusu-Koramoah (+1400)
