Cole Caufield Calder Odds & Analysis

Cole Caufield came to life for the Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs last season. Luckily for him, it was in the NHL postseason and is still an eligible rookie for the 2021-22 NHL season. To complete an NHL rookie season, players must dress and play in 25 regular season games. Caufield played in 10 regular season games and 20 postseason games, making him eligible for the Calder Trophy this season.

The 20-year-old had eight goals and nine assists last season totalling 17 points. He has a wicked shot, and the Canadiens plan to utilize him properly.

As of right now, it looks like Caufield will be playing on the Habs’ first line alongside Nick Suzuki and Tyler Toffoli, a trio that flourished in the Habs’ Cup run. Caufield will also be on the first powerplay line on the point, which will give him a lot of opportunities for his big shot.

Caufield’s expected goal rate in the playoffs was 54 percent and he averaged 22 shot attempts per 60 minutes in his 30 game clip. I picked Kaprizov to win the Calder last season for two reasons: Experience & Usage. The Canadiens are going to use Caufield a ton, and his playoff experience gives him an edge over other rookies. I expect Caufield to net 25-30 goals this season, and if he does that, the Calder will be his.

Best Bet: Cole Caufield (+350)

Cole Perfetti Calder Odds & Analysis

Cole Perfetti is an intriguing longshot to win the Calder this season. Perfetti is listed at +4000 in the NHL odds to win Rookie of the Year. The Jets have offensive firepower, and Perfetti will be able to compliment that well if he develops properly in his rookie season.

One thing we know about the Jets’ 10th overall draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft is that he can score. Perfetti logged 111 points in his final season with the Saginaw Spirit. Not to mention, in his 32 games with the Manitoba Moose last year he managed nine goals and 17 assists.

The Whitby, Ontario native cracked the Jets opening night roster and will play alongside Adam Lowry and Jansen Harkins on the third line. If Perfetti shows early progress, he could very well move up in the depth chart and even crack one of the lethal powerplay units in Winnipeg. The Jets have great NHL Playoff odds, which adds to a Calder resume if Perfetti can help them get there in a big way.

Perfetti will be the main scorer on his current line, so if he capitalizes on his chances his odds will shorten quickly. Take the value on his +4000 odds now as my top longshot pick. There’s a lot more speculation around the playing time of the other rookies at +4000, including Kaliyev, Dahlen, and Lapierre. So, Perfetti is the best bet at this price.

Sleeper Pick: Cole Perfetti (+4000)
