Vegas On A Roll

Arguably the hottest team through the first 10 or so days of the new NHL season, the Golden Knights welcome Colorado on Saturday night with just one blemish on their record through five games. That came Tuesday, in Calgary when the Flames came from behind to grab the win. But Vegas had a chance to bounce back Thursday, scoring four first-period goals on its way to a comfortable 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

However, even with a hot start that has propelled them to the top of the NHL, Vegas is a distant 10th to favorite Colorado in the 2023 Stanley Cup odds. The Knights’ hot start has been fuelled by stingy defense, with the team giving up just two goals per game, tied for second-best in the NHL.

On top of that, the Knights’ lone loss of the season came on the road in Calgary, with the team so far posting a perfect 2-0 record at T-Mobile Arena, scoring six goals and conceding just two in wins over Chicago and Winnipeg.

Avs A Champion Underdog

Colorado will find itself in an unfamiliar spot on Saturday night. Four months after earning the third Stanley Cup in franchise history, the Avalanche will be an underdog against the Knights, who have a share of first place in the overall NHL standings alongside Boston. But Colorado will likely be a motivated squad coming into Vegas, with the team having given up a late goal to the Seattle Kraken in falling 3-2 to the second-year NHL team on home ice Friday night.

And that follows on the heels of Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Jets, who came into town and left with a 4-3 overtime win, so maybe getting out on the road is exactly what the defending champions need. Colorado only had two losing streaks longer than two games all of last season.

In addition, Colorado was one of the best teams on the road last year, with its 24 wins tied for second-most in the entire league.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights Pick & Prediction

Colorado has won its past two encounters with the Knights in Vegas, with the most recent of these meetings coming back on February 26th in a 3-2 win.

Winning the Stanley Cup last spring likely went a long way to exercise the demons that were raised when Vegas eliminated Colorado from the playoffs in 2021, and the Avalanche seem like a good bet to bounce back from consecutive home losses to Winnipeg and Seattle with a solid 60 minutes here. The Over is a good bet too, with the Avs currently averaging 3.80 goals per game, with the Knights no offensive slouches either at 3.40.

Pick: Avalanche (-105); OVER 6.5 (-121)
