Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will miss the start of training camp due to an illness, and there is no timetable for his return. • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 in Game 1 of their first round series
  • Game 2 goes Thursday, August 13th from the bubble in Edmonton
  • See puckline, moneyline and over/under goal totals within the story below

Heading into their first round matchup, the Vegas Golden Knights were huge favorites to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, who escaped a four-game qualifying series against the Edmonton Oilers despite being the 12th and final team in the Western Conference to squeak into the postseason.

After Game 1, Blackhawks fans might be wishing they had lost to Oil Country so they could’ve had a chance to win phase two of the draft lottery to earn the first overall pick because they were overmatched by a vastly superior Golden Knights squad on Tuesday night.

We were able to nail the moneyline and puckline odds correctly for the first meeting, but got a little overzealous in the O/U goal total of 6.5, which resulted in a miss on that score.

The Blackhawks vs Golden Knights betting trends and odds for Game 2 of this best-of-7 series, unsurprisingly point towards Vegas taking a strong grip on this series.

Chicago Blackhawks vs Golden Knights Game 2 Odds

Team Moneyline Puckline (Including OT) Total Goals (Including OT) at DraftKings
Vegas Golden Knights -200 -1.5 (+132) Over 6.5 (+102)
Chicago Blackhawks +175 +1.5 (-157) Under 6.5 (-122)

Odds taken August 12

Vegas has been on a roll, winning all four games since the NHL restart, scoring at least four goals in each contest and they’ve now won nine of ten all-time meetings between these two organizations.

The odds are even more in Vegas’ favor after a resounding three-goal victory in Game 1, with them now being a -200 favorite compared to -186 before the first tilt.

Reilly Smith Came to Play In Game 1

After a scoreless first period, Vegas jumped out to a two-goal edge in just over two minutes in the second frame, but saw their lead cut in half by the second intermission.

In the third stanza, Reilly Smith took over the game, scoring back-to-back goals to seal Chicago’s fate to go along with one assist earlier in the game.

The crazy thing is this game could’ve been even uglier, with Vegas using their speed to impose their will on Chicago, outshooting their counterparts 34-20. As we figured, if the Golden Knights could smash Dallas, St. Louis and Colorado in the Round Robin, things could get ugly for a Blackhawks team that is overmatched in every capacity, except for playoff pedigree.

Blackhawks Stars Need to Step Up Immediately

If Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews don’t dig deep and party like it’s their three Stanley Cup heyday, things could get very ugly in a hurry. The duo combined for just three shots in Game 1 and it goes without saying that if they don’t step up, they’ll be in a world of hurt trying to keep up with a squad that led the NHL in scoring in the Round Robin/Qualifying Series portion of the postseason schedule.

Toews still possesses incredible leadership intangibles, coming to the aid of rookie defenseman Adam Boqvist (seen above), but the Blackhawks will need that to also turn into goal-scoring production to have a chance.

There doesn’t seem to be much reason to believe in Chicago just yet so I’d keep hammering the same bet that won two of three aspects in Game 1.

Pick: Vegas Golden Knights -200 moneyline, -1.5 puckline (+132), Over 6.5 goals (+102)
