  • The Capitals are -148 moneyline favorites over the Blues on Wednesday, Nov. 5th
  • St. Louis has won six of their last eight duels against Washington

The puck drops on Wednesday Night Hockey, featuring an interconference battle between the Blues and Capitals. This year, St. Louis has struggled to the second-worst mark in the NHL (4-7-2, 5-8 ATS), while Washington (6-5-1, 7-5 ATS) has been stuck in neutral, one step from the basement in the Eastern Conference.

The Blues are coming off their first victory in eight games on Monday versus the Oilers, and the Caps have also been reeling, dropping four straight contests, so something will have to give.

Action is set to get underway at 7:30 pm ET from Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, with TNT, truTV, HBO Max and Monumental Sports Network providing the coverage in the United States.

Blues vs Capitals Prediction

Neither of these teams are among the contenders in the Stanley Cup Odds, with WSH having a better chance in the eyes of oddsmakers at +2500, while STL is +6600.

St. Louis has defeated Washington in six of the last eight duels, and at least six goals have been combined in all but one of those battles. Despite that, I’m going with under 5.5 combined goals being scored at +114, due to Capitals netminder Logan Thompson being on a heater, plus the Caps are near the bottom in scoring.

There have been significant injuries to both sides – for the Blues, Jake Neighbours has missed five contests with a leg injury and is on IR. He tickled the twine six times in his first eight outings.

As for Washington, they expect to get blueliner Rasmus Sandin back, after missing five games with an upper-body injury.

News isn’t so good for forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, who will be gone for an extended period of time with a lower-body ailment. He may need surgery, but that hasn’t been decided as of yet. He had no points in six contests this season, but it’s a huge loss for the Caps, as he racked up 66 points in his first tour of duty with them in 2024-25.

The Blues and Caps couldn’t be any more different in terms of keeping the puck out of their net. Washington is tops in the NHL, while St. Louis is tied for worst. Strangely, the Capitals aren’t especially strong on the penalty kill, yet that hasn’t bitten them too much yet.

For a team that’s been a high-flying offensive unit for years, led by captain Alex Ovechkin, they’ve sunk to fifth-worst in goals for, after being second-best last campaign. Perhaps it’s the hangover after surpassing Wayne Gretzky for most goals in NHL history, but Ovi has just two snipes in twelve times suiting up, as he’s one goal away from 900 in his career.

Logan Thompson gets the nod between the pipes for WSH, and he’s been dynamite with a 1.51 GAA and .935 save %. He hasn’t allowed more than two markers in any of his eight starts.

The Blues are expected to go with Jordan Binnington, who hasn’t been quite so solid, with a 3.08 GAA and .868 save %. He’s surrendered 3+ in four of five after only allowing that to happen once in his first five games.

Blues vs Capitals Prop Pick

For a prop bet in this affair, I’m going with Thompson to continue to ride the hot hand. St. Louis puts 27.3 pucks on net per game, and if he keeps up his pace of not allowing more than two goals, he’ll easily breeze by that. In his last five skirmishes against the Blues, Thompson has made at least 24 saves against them.

If you want to parlay under 5.5 goals being scored with Thompson making 22 or more stops, that total pays out +290.
