It’s the season opener for a couple of aging, but still contending Eastern Conference NHL squads on Wednesday, October 12th, when the Bruins visit the Capitals in Washington. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm ET at Capital One Arena with TNT providing the broadcast of the game.
With injuries to some key players, Boston are the underdogs in this one, as oddsmakers have installed the Capitals as -143 moneyline favorites to win their season opener at home.
Let’s take a look at all the Bruins vs Capitals Wednesday NHL odds below and dissect this matchup so we can give you our best NHL pick and prediction.

The Capitals are paying +170 on the puck line in the Wednesday NHL odds and the over/under total for this contest stands at six goals. The teams combined to score 23 goals, an average of 7.7 per game, in their three head-to-head meetings last year.
Boston Bruins Betting Outlook
Patrice Bergeron contemplated retirement in the offseason but ultimately decided to return for another run at a championship in Beantown. Longtime teammate, David Krejci, is also back in the fold after spending last season playing in the Czech Republic.
The Bruins 1-2 punch down the middle is getting a little long in the tooth, but last year, Bergeron proved once again that he is amongst the best pivots in the league, winning his fifth Selke Trophy. His analytic numbers were also off the charts, topping all centers with an on-ice “expected goals against” (xGA) of just 2.25 goals per 60 minutes.

He will be missing longtime linemate Brad Marchand to open the season though. The Bruins pest is recovering from off-season surgery and isn’t expected back in the lineup until late November. Number one defenseman, Charlie McAvoy is also out for a while, so it might be tough sledding in the early going for Boston.
On the bright side of things, playing on the road was no issue at all for Boston last year. With 25 wins away from home, they were tied for most in the NHL.
Expect David Pastrnak to pick up the slack offensively with Marchand out. The Bruins winger is an unrestricted free agent after this year and will be playing for a big contract. Always one of the top contenders in the Rocket Richard Trophy odds, Pasta scored 32 goals in his final 46 games last season after a slow start.

Capitals Minus A Couple Key Forwards in Wednesday NHL Odds
Boston isn’t the only team dealing with losses to their lineup. The Capitals will be without Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson to start the year. The Caps core group, led by the indefatigable Alexander Ovechkin, is also aging quickly and won’t be given serious consideration in the Stanley Cup odds for much longer.
The biggest move the Capitals made in the summer was overhauling their goaltending situation. Gone are Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek, replaced in part by the signing of Darcy Kuemper to a five-year, $26.25 million deal fresh off his Stanley Cup run with the Colorado Avalanche.
Darcy Kuemper stopped 36 of 39 shots against Columbus. In three preseason appearances, Kuemper posted a 2-0-0 record with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.

It’s not expected that Kuemper will be one of the goalies in the running for the Vezina Trophy odds, but the Caps are hoping he will stabilize the position and give their team some confidence going forward.
Bruins vs Capitals Same-Game Parlay Picks
Pick | Odds |
---|---|
David Pastrnak Anytime Goalscorer | +135 |
Boston Bruins Puck Line + 1.5 | -215 |
PARLAY ODDS | +195 |
There’s a new coach behind the bench in Boston this year and the team will want to get out to a good start for Jim Montgomery. Washington also struggled at home last season, as they were the only playoff team that didn’t win at least 20 games in the confines of their own arena.
Bruins vs Capitals Pick & Prediction
It’s an interesting opening matchup considering there are many similarities between these two squads and what they’re going through. The best players from both teams are both on the wrong side of 30 and both sides have injuries to key players they’re dealing with.
While Washington has home ice, that wasn’t much of an advantage for them last year as they compiled a 19-6-6 at Capital One Arena last season.

Not only did Boston take two of three from the Capitals last year, but they’ve won six of the last seven against Washington overall. Adding in all the factors of the Caps poor home record last year and the Bruins looking to win one for their new coach off the bat, the best bet in the Bruins vs Capitals Wednesday NHL odds is to take Boston on the road at +120.
Pick: Boston Bruins Moneyline (+120)
