The Florida Panthers will be looking to extend their lead atop the NHL standings with a third straight win when they visit the slumping New York Rangers on Monday night in a betting matchup pegged as a virtual pick ‘em.

The Panthers improved their NHL-leading record to 10-0-1 on Saturday with a decisive 5-2 win over the Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes. The Rangers return home on a three-game slide after closing out last week’s Western road trip with a dismal 6-0 loss in Calgary. Puck drop on Monday night’s contest is set for 7 pm ET at Madison Square Garden.

Panthers vs Rangers Betting Trends

Monday night’s matchup marks the first meeting between these two teams in almost two years. The Panthers have eked out one-goal wins in each of their past two clashes, but it is the Rangers that have traditionally dominated, earning the win in 17 of 26 head-to-head meetings since December 2011.

High scoring has emerged as a consistent theme, with these two teams combining to score an average of 7.90 goals per game during a steady 10-0-0 run for the OVER. However, home favorites have proven to be much less reliable, claiming victory just twice over their past 10 games.

Panthers Outlook

Listed as a -110 bet on Monday night, the Panthers extended their torrid start with another impressive performance on Saturday. For the third time in four outings, Florida marched out to a multi-goal lead in the first period, potting four goals in the first 15:28 of a highly anticipated date with the previously undefeated Hurricanes. However, maintaining those leads has presented a challenge, with three of the team’s past four contests needing overtime or a shootout to be settled.

Injuries have emerged as a concern for Florida as the team embarks on a four-game road trip. Team captain Aleksander Barkov was forced to miss Saturday’s date with the Canes with a lower body injury, and his status remains uncertain for Monday’s matchup. Barkov was just finding his groove before getting injured, scoring five goals over his three most recent appearances, and seven total points during a five-game point streak.

While no official announcement has been made, it is looking unlikely that Sergei Bobrovsky will get the call in net on Monday. Bobrovsky has been listed as day-to-day since leaving Thursday’s 5-4 win over Washington with an upper body injury. That opens the door for Spencer Knight to make his fifth start of the season. The 20-year-old has compiled a 4-0-0 record, but could certainly benefit from tight play by the Panthers defence, which has allowed a worrisome average of 33.6 shots on goal over the team’s past five outings.

Rangers Outlook

Eager to overcome their first bout of adversity this season, the Rangers get set to hit the ice on Monday also sporting -110 odds. A dominant defensive force while romping to a 6-2-1 start, the club has taken a massive step back during their current three-game losing streak.

New York limited opponents to two or fewer goals on six occasions over their first nine outings, but have been rocked during their current swoon, allowing five goals per game. Complicating matters further is New York’s uneven performance at home, where the team has earned just one win in three appearances to date. Despite their uneven play, the Rangers remain a strong bet to return to the playoffs after falling short last season, listed at -240 in the NHL playoff odds.

Much of the credit for the Rangers’ early-season stingy ways must go to goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who is also expected to get the call on Monday night. The talented 25-year-old climbed into the conversation in the Vezina Trophy odds while allowing just 12 total goals over his first seven starts. However, Shesterkin has often been left to fend for himself while facing 31 or more shots on goal in each of his past five outings, and in seven of his nine overall starts this season.

Picks: Panthers (-110); OVER 5.5 (-110)
