Bruins Become Heavier Cup Favorites

The Boston Bruins entered the 2023 NHL Trade deadline with the best odds to win the Stanley Cup at online sportsbooks. By the time 3 pm EST rolled around on March 3rd, the Bruins had become an even heavier favorite.

The Bruins acquired defenseman Dimitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals and forward Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings, plus signed David Pastrnak to an eight-year extension. The flurry of moves caused BetMGM Sportsbook to shorten Boston’s Cup odds from +500 to +425.

Boston’s current price in the 2023 Stanley Cup odds implies the powerhouse team has a 19% chance to win hockey’s ultimate prize this season. The timing couldn’t be better, with Massachusetts sports betting set to launch on March 10th.

The Bruins lead the NHL with 101 points in 61 games, which is 10-plus more points than the next-best team in the league. Perhaps fans were expecting Bostson’s Cup odds to shorten even further with these moves, but it’s important to note the team recently placed star forward Taylor Hall on long-term injured reserve.

Rangers Get Boost with Kane Trade

No team got a bigger boost in the post-trade deadline Stanley Cup odds than the New York Rangers. That’s what you can expect to happen when you acquire arguably the most sought out forward available for trade.

The Rangers acquired superstar forward Patrick Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks, which shortened the team’s Cup odds from +1400 to +1100. Based on the betting odds, the Rangers went from a 6.67% implied probability to win the Cup to an 8.3% win probability.

New York already acquired St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko earlier in the month, making them one of the most intriguing teams in the NHL Playoff bracket. The Rangers reached the Eastern Conference Final last season before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Speaking of Eastern Conference powerhouses, the New Jersey Devils also saw their Stanley Cup odds improve after acquiring a top NHL trade target. The Devils traded for Timo Meier from San Jose, which shortened the team’s Cup odds from +1400 to +1200.

Capitals Odds to Win Stanley Cup Lengthen

While the Rangers and Devils are rising in the East, there is one team heading in the opposite direction. Online sportsbooks viewed the Washington Capitals as one of the biggest losers of the trade deadline, as they dropped the team’s Cup odds from +5000 to +8000.

Washington clearly sees the writing on the wall in terms of their NHL Playoffs odds, as they made some moves that negatively impact their short-term future but improve their long-term outlook. The Capitals parted with veteran Garnet Hathaway and Dimitry Orlov in separate deals for draft picks.

Capitals Trade Deadline Moves

Additions Subtractions
F Craig Smith F Garnet Hathaway
D Rasmus Sandin F Marcus Johansson
Multiple Draft Picks F Lars Eller
D Dmitry Orlov
D Erik Gustafsson

These players leaving the team aren’t the sole reason for Washington’s drastic drop in the odds, as the team’s poor play on the ice is obviously a factor as well. Even if the Caps sneak into the postseason, oddsmakers are aware the team has suffered four consecutive first-round exits.

The Caps weren’t the only team that experienced a negative drop in their Cup odds, as the Blues’ chances also got drastically worse. St. Louis parted with captain Ryan Reilly in a trade with Toronto, causing the team’s Cup odds to lengthen from +20000 to +50000.
