Verstappen Enjoys Breakthrough at Austria
Starting alongside Charles Leclerc on the front row, Verstappen engaged in an entertaining duel with his Ferrari rival for much of the second half of the race before boldly overtaking Leclerc on the 69th lap, a move that led to an immediate investigation by race stewards, who later declared the Belgian has committed no foul.
Verstappen also earned the win at Austria a year ago, and now has five wins to his credit since breaking into Formula One in 2015. The 21-year-old has now reached the podium on three occasions this season, including third-place finishes at Melbourne and Spain. Verstappen padded his point total by claiming the fastest lap at Austria, lifting him into third place on the Formula One Driver Standings, with 126 points.

With Lewis Hamilton still perched atop the standings with 197 points despite finishing fifth at Austria, Verstappen remains a distant +5000 wager to claim his first career F1 championship. However, Verstappen should not be overlooked in British Grand Prix wagering.
Verstappen has failed to finish on two occasions in four career appearances at Silverstone, including a year ago, when his victory at Austria was dampened by a rash of gearbox issues at the British Grand Prix. However, he has also enjoyed success at this race, including a second-place run in 2016.
Hamilton Perched Atop British Grand Prix Odds
A five-time British Grand Prix winner, including victories in four of the past five years, Hamilton returns to Silverstone perched as a heavy -120 favorite.
British Grand Prix Recent Winners
Year | Driver | Margin of Victory |
---|---|---|
2018 | Sebastian Vettel – Ferrari | 2.264 sec |
2017 | Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes | 14.063 sec |
2016 | Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes | +8.250 sec |
2015 | Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes | 10.956 |
2014 | Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes | 30.135 |
In addition to six career wins in his home race, Hamilton has recorded a pair of second-place finishes at this event, leaving him well positioned to extend his steady dominance of this year’s F1 season. Prior to his disappointing run at Austria, the 34-year-old Englishman was looking unstoppable, taking the checkered flag on six occasions while not finishing worse than second through the first eight events of the season.
Mercedes Teammates Continue to Dominate Driver Standings
Now leading the F1 standings by 31 points over Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton remains a strong, albeit reduced, -1200 favorite to take home a fourth consecutive F1 title this season.

Hamilton’s year-long domination of the F1 circuit has been nearly complete, with wins in 14 of his past 20 race appearances, and going more than one race without a victory on just one occasion during that stretch. And his recent victories at Silverstone have been decisive, with none of his four most recent wins coming by a margin of victory less then eight seconds.
Hamilton’s Decisive Victories at Silverstone Reflected on Props
That history has most certainly fueled the strong +135 odds favoring this year’s winning margin being over eight seconds. However, with defending British Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel earning his victory a year ago by just 2.264 seconds, a narrow victory by under four seconds sports the same +135 odds on the British Grand Prix props.
2019 British Grand Prix Margin of Victory Odds
Driver | British Grand Prix Margin of Victory Odds |
---|---|
UNDER 4 seconds | +135 |
Between 4 and 8 seconds, inclusive | +275 |
OVER 8 seconds | +135 |
However, with just one victory since taking the checkered flag at last year’s British Grand Prix, and just four podium appearances through the first nine races of 2019, the Ferrari driver and four-time F1 champion lags on the F1 race futures at +450.
Bottas, Leclerc Looking to Keep Pace
Bottas sits second to Hamilton as a +300 wager to claim his third win of the season, while Leclerc looks to rebound from his loss to Verstappen at Austria as a +400 bet. Bottas has finished in the top four at this event in each of the past two years, a factor in the strong -350 odds favoring a race win by Mercedes on Sunday.
Bottas has finished in the top four at this event in each of the past two years.
Conversely, it has been a hard luck season for Leclerc, who failed to finish in his lone career appearance at Silverstone a year ago. The 21-year-old Monte Carlo native was denied the victory at Bahrain by mechanical problems that doomed him to a third place finish, and was clearly unhappy by the stewards’ decision on Verstappen’s race-winning pass at Austria.
Picks: Hamilton to win British Grand Prix (+500); Margin of victory OVER 8 seconds (+135)
