The battle for the top of the Formula 1 Drivers Standings will heat up at Sunday’s running of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. Sergio Perez looks to build on his impressive drive to victory at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix two weeks ago, but arrives in Melbourne trailing Red Bull teammate and growing rival Max Verstappen by one point in the Standings. All eyes will also be on Fernando Alonso, as the two-time F1 champion aims to extend his fast start to the season with a third straight podium finish.

Here’s a look at all the odds and trends ahead of the running of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix in the wee hours of Sunday morning, with race time set for 1:00 am ET at Albert Park Circuit.

Gloves Are Off at Red Bull

For the second time in as many races, Red Bull swept the top of the podium two weeks ago in Saudi Arabia. But with Max Verstappen seizing the fastest lap from Sergio Perez on the final lap of the race, he denied “Checo” his first career lead in the Standings, and further intensified a growing rift between the teammates.

While Red Bull has clearly fielded the fastest cars through the first two races of the season, this growing feud is likely to reach a point of diminishing returns that could prove costly to the team. No more can Verstappen count on having Perez act as his “Mexican Minister of Defense”, particularly in Melbourne, where the two-time defending champion has reached the podium just once in six career appearances.

Australian Grand Prix Picks

Fernando Alonso has widened the field of legitimate challengers to Red Bull’s dominance with his fast start. The 41-year-old’s surprise move to Aston Martin has paid off so far. However, Alonso has endured a steady stretch of adversity of late in Australia, where he finished a distant 17th a year ago after failing to finish in each of his two previous appearances.

Charles Leclerc’s inability to rediscover the touch that enabled him to complete the sweep at this race justifies his continued dip in the odds. Leclerc qualified second two weeks ago in Saudi Arabia, but never emerged as a real threat to claim the checkered flag on his way to a seventh-place finish. However, Leclerc and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. offer value as -150 bet to both finish among the top six.

The Picks: Fernando Alonso podium finish (-175); Ferrari Double Top Six Finish (-150)
