  • New Zealand are the +110 favorites to win the 2019 Rugby World Cup
  • The All Blacks have won the past two Rugby World Cup titles
  • They are the only country to win consecutive Rugby World Cups

Some things in the world may be explained in black and white terms but at the Rugby World Cup, it always starts with the All Blacks.

New Zealand’s national rugby team, known worldwide as the All Blacks due to the color of their kits, have reigned supreme as the #1-ranked team in world rugby for the past eight years. And the sportsbooks don’t see that changing as the 2019 Rugby World Cup fast approaches.

Online betting sites have established New Zealand as the +110 favorites to win an unprecedented third successive title in the Rugby World Cup odds.

2019 Rugby World Cup Odds

Team Odds
New Zealand +110
England +450
Ireland +800
Wales +800
South Africa +900

Odds taken on 07/05/19.

South Africa, in 2007, was the last nation other than New Zealand to win a Rugby World Cup.

The Rulers of Rugby

New Zealand dominance over the past two World Cups is astonishing. They’ve won 14 consecutive games and in only two of them was the margin of victory fewer than 10 points.

At the 2015 tournament, in pool play the All Blacks outscored their opponents 174-49. In a rematch of the 2011 final, New Zealand drubbed France 62-13 in the quarterfinals.

South Africa was the only team to give New Zealand a game, falling 20-18 in the semifinals. Australia was victimized 34-17 in the final.

Who Can Stop Them?

Both South Africa (36-34) and Ireland (16-9) manage to defeat the All Blacks during the 2018 season. The South Africans always play New Zealand tough. Both countries are grouped in the same pool in Japan.

Ireland was considered the greatest threat to New Zealand’s dominance but then the Irish were handled by both England and Wales during the Six Nations earlier this year. The Irish have never advanced beyond the quarterfinals at the Rugby World Cup.

Wales made it as far as the semifinals in 2015. The Welsh are a scrappy bunch that always show up for the fight and should never be discounted.

England won the 2003 title but embarrassingly crashed out in pool play at home in the last World Cup, losing to Wales and Australia. The English are an erratic side. They’re capable of beating anyone in the world but find consistency to be an elusive element in their game. And England is housed in the Group of Death in Japan with both France and Argentina, so one of these rugby powers will be going home early.

It’s Still A New Zealand World

As veteran stars such as two-time world player of the year Beauden Barrett and the legendary Sonny Bill Williams mesh with newcomers like Rieko Ioane, who’s scored 22 tries in his first 24 matches for New Zealand, the All Blacks remain a formidable foe.

They’re the team to beat later this year in Japan.
