The oddsmakers are expecting Alex Morgan and the United States to put the boots to the Netherlands in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final. Odds list the Americans as the -233 chalk to win the match and defend their title.

Books also anticipate that Morgan will be putting the Golden Boot as the tournament’s leading goal scorer in her trophy case when all is said and done. Morgan is the odds-on -135 favorite to be the top goalscorer.

Morgan and England’s Ellen White, who plays against Sweden in Saturday’s third-place game, share top spot. Each has scored six goals.

Down to the Wire

Morgan tallied the winner as the USWNT earned their way to the final via a 2-1 semifinal victory over England. While it was her sixth goal of the tournament, it was the first she’d registered since tallying five times for the Americans in a 13-0 rout of Thailand during their opening match.

White netted the England goal, continuing her consistent performance in the tournament. She’s scored at least once in each of the last four matches for the English and in five of the six games they’ve played during the tournament.

Don’t Count Out Rapinoe

Besides being US President Donald Trump’s least favorite player in the USWNT, co-captain Megan Rapinoe fills another important role in the side. The veteran midfielder is the penalty taker for the USA. How many World Cup finals have you watched over the years where a penalty kick provided the decisive marker?

Rapinoe has scored five goals during the tournament, including both goals as the USWNT edged France 2-1 in the quarterfinal.

Also of note in this regard – White is not England’s first-choice penalty taker. That task is currently handled by Steph Houghton.

Tie Goes to Morgan

If more than one player end up deadlocked atop the goal-scoring chart, it’s not like the spelling bee. There will be no ties.

The tiebreaker to determine who gets the Golden Boot is assists. And Morgan’s helping hands give her a leg up in this race.

Morgan has dished out three assists during the tournament. She’s tied for second in the WWC in that department.

White has not collected a single assist.

Will White Hit a Winner?

As much as we expect the steady Americans to win the World Cup, it’s equally difficult to look past the steady form of White. She just pots goals, virtually every game.

Even though Morgan holds the edge in the tiebreaker, her erratic goal-poaching makes it troublesome to confidently back her here.

White is the right play.

Pick: Ellen White (+150)
