Colombia Limps to Semifinal

Colombia’s tournament has been a generally disappointing one – especially as they were highly fancied coming into it – but despite having only won a single game so far, they find themselves in the semifinal and with a shot at a place in Sunday’s showpiece final.

Their only win came way back on June 13 when they opened their Group B fixtures with a hard-earned win over Ecuador – Edwin Cardona scoring the only goal of the game on the stroke of halftime – but there were signs of things to come in their next game against the group’s minnows, Venezuela, when they could only manage a goalless draw.

Heartache Against Brazil

The lack of creativity that has hindered them all tournament was apparent again in their third game when they suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Peru – a result that saw the Peruvians leapfrog them into second place in the group –  and so it was no surprise when in their final group game, they lost 2-1 to the hosts, Brazil. Worth noting though is that this was by far their best performance of the tournament and was only settled by a Casemiro goal an incredible 10 minutes into injury time.

They ended the group stage in third place and so were handed a tricky last-eight tie against Uruguay, who had been playing well and had only lost a single game. Therefore it was to Colombia’s credit that they took the Uruguayans all the way and were then able to hold their nerve in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out – Ospina producing two fine saves to see his country through to this semi with Argentina.

Argentina on the March

Argentina’s passage to the semifinal has been much smoother than Colombia’s, and their only slight blemish came in their opening game when they drew 1-1 with Chile – their only goal coming from Lionel Messi – but it was followed up with three consecutive wins.

In their second game, against Uruguay, they again managed just the one goal – scored on this occasion by Guido Rodriguez – and repeated the same feat in game three, when a Papu Gomez goal was enough to edge past Paraguay, but the shackles came off in their final group game when they hammered point-less Bolivia 4-1.

The win over Bolivia took Argentina to 10 points out of a possible 12 and saw them finish top of the group, which took them to a favorable-looking quarterfinal clash with Ecuador. Lionel Scaloni’s men then made easy work of their last-eight clash and were able to cruise to a comfortable 3-0, while conserving some energy in the process – goals coming from Rodrigo De Paul, Messi, and  Lautaro Martinez.

They now head into this semi as red hot favorites as they look to win the Copa America for the 15th time in their history, and, incredibly, for the first time since 1993.

Argentina vs Colombia Best Bets

It is really hard to make a case here for a Colombia win although it is worth remembering that their best performance in the last month came against their toughest opponents, Brazil. They do have the players to compete against the best but have found consistency hard to come by in this tournament.

Argentina, meanwhile, appears to be in imperious form and there looks to be a swagger and assurance about them that makes them so hard to play against. With Messi looking as dangerous as ever, I can see a repeat of the Ecuador result.

Pick: Argentina to win (-125) / Messi first goalscorer (+350)
