Losing 3-0 at Stamford Bridge as good as ruled Chelsea out of this tie. Frank Lampard’s team needs a miracle in Munich if they are to book a place in the quarterfinals.

Bayern Munich host Chelsea at Allianz Arena on Saturday, August 8th. This is the first time the two teams have met in Munich since Chelsea won the Champions League final there in 2012 when Lampard was a player.

Much has changed at both clubs since then, of course. Bayern, though, are once again champions of Germany and are one of the favorites to lift the Champions League in Lisbon next month.

The table below has the spread, moneyline and total goals odds – what’s the best bet?

Weakened Chelsea

The FA Cup final couldn’t have gone much worse for Chelsea. They were on the wrong end of some questionable refereeing decisions, lost the match, and saw three players go off injured. Pedro, Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta all left the field, and none of them are available for this tie. Pulisic and Azpilicueta could miss the start of next season too after pulling up with hamstring injuries.

Azpilicueta’s absence is important not only for his leadership and defensive capabilities but what it means for Lampard’s tactical options. The Spaniard is versatile and allows Lampard to switch seamlessly between a back three and four, filling in on either side of the defense or as a center-back. Without Azpilicueta, Kurt Zouma would likely be the right-sided center-back, left to deal with Serge Gnabry or Kingsley Coman.

Pulisic’s role in Chelsea’s end of season push for the top four cannot be overstated. They were reliant on him as a chance creator. Mason Mount and Willian will likely start in the front three in the American’s absence.

Supreme Bayern

Bayern outclassed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. A lot of time has passed since that match in February, but Bayern’s performances have only improved. They have won all 14 of their competitive matches since then, winning their eighth consecutive Bundesliga at a canter.

Where Lampard’s options are limited, Hansi Flick has limited selection concerns. Benjamin Pavard’s absence is the most notable, but Joshua Kimmich is a brilliant deputy to have at right-back, allowing Thiago and Leon Goretzka to play as the midfield pairing. Leroy Sane is ineligible despite arriving from Manchester City last month.

Bayern are a free-scoring team. They notched 100 Bundesliga goals, and their 27 tallied in the Champions League is seven more than anyone else. Led by the best striker in the world in Robert Lewandowski, and well-rested after the Bundesliga season finished in early July, Bayern meet a Chelsea defense that has conceded 18 goals since the Premier League restarted.

Repeat Performance

The tie is gone, and even at full strength, it would be a big ask for Chelsea to avoid defeat. Without as many as eight first-team players and after a grueling end to the Premier League season, Lampard’s side could be on the end of another heavy defeat.

Bayern at -1 represents solid value, but -2 at +175 is tempting. This could get ugly for Chelsea, who will already be looking ahead to next season after FA Cup disappointment.

Pick: Bayern -2 (+175)
