Last Gasp Win for Man City

Phil Foden’s last-minute winner at the Etihad Stadium gave City the narrowest of first-leg wins, but the Citizens were made to work hard for their victory. They still, however, remain on course for a record-breaking quadruple, even though they did suffer a shock 2-1 home defeat at the weekend against a ten-man Leeds United.

Make no mistake though, the Leeds defeat is the merest of blips in what is now a procession to the EPL title. City leads the pack by 11 points with just six games remaining and it is a matter of when not if. They also have an upcoming League (Carabao) Cup Final against Tottenham and an FA Cup semifinal against their city rivals, United, and so for them, the quadruple is still very much on but the hurdle offered by BVB is a significant one.

Tough Examination for City

Foden’s last-minute winner did little to disguise what was one of City’s toughest examinations of the season, and BVB, despite having just 32-percent of the possession, were structured, solid, and made life very difficult for the Citizens. The Germans also had to overcome a typical City high-tempo opening, during which, they opened the scoring through Kevin De Bruyne, but responded well and had a goal from Jude Bellingham harshly ruled out for dangerous play.

Marco Reus eventually scored the Dortmund equalizer six minutes from time with a calm finish from Erling Haaland’s pass but it was Foden who had the final say. Only time will tell if City will rue conceding that away goal.

Domestic Struggles for BVB

For BVB, the season has not gone as planned and their annual struggle with Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title has not materialized. Instead, they find themselves languishing in fifth place; a whopping 19 points adrift of leaders Bayern and seven points behind fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. As things stand, they look unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League although, crucially, they did win 3-2 away to VfB Stuggart at the weekend to at least keep themselves in contention.

Dortmund also has a semifinal in the DFB-Pokal (the German Cup) coming up against 2.Bundesliga team Holstein Kiel, so do have another avenue to silverware and European soccer but this tie with Man City is seen by them as the big one; one that could potentially open the door to another Champions League final. With players of the quality of Haaland and Reus in their side, their relatively poor domestic campaign should not disguise their ability to pull off big wins against the best. While City remains favorites to go through, Pep Guardiola knows his City team still has plenty of work to do.

Borussia Dortmund vs Man City Best Bets

It almost goes without saying that City starts odds-on for the win but this will be much more even than the bookies are suggesting. BVB, minus the distraction of a Bundesliga run-in, will throw everything at this, and with Haaland being touted with a move to one of the European giants this summer, there is a feeling he will want to go out with a bang.

So let’s ignore the City win as it offers little in terms of value. Of far more interest is the draw at better than 3/1 which, given the state of the game, is entirely feasible. It would suit City, as it would see them through to the semifinal, but would reflect how little there is to choose between these two.

Pick: BVB and Man City to draw (+310)
