  • The Blues beat Ajax in Amsterdam on Matchday 3 on October 23rd by a score of 1-0
  • The Dutch giants will now travel to Stamford Bridge for another clash on November 5th
  • Frank Lampard’s young Chelsea squad are favorites to win at +101

The high-flying Blues will once again take on the semifinalists from last year’s competition, Ajax. Chelsea has been in spectacular form as of late, winning their last seven matches in all competitions. They currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League.

It was a relatively even fixture when these teams last met at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, but a late Michy Batshuayi winner sent the Blues home with a huge victory. The Dutch hotshots are 9-2-0 this season in the Eredivisie, conceding just seven goals in 11 matches while netting 35.

Both sides sit atop Group H with six points each, so this match will be a huge one for both. Chelsea’s only loss in this year’s UCL competition came by the hands of Valencia back in mid-September in London, while Ajax’s first defeat this season was to the blues a week ago.

Thanks to Chelsea’s win over the Dutch side in their previous match, they’re slight favorites to win on Matchday 4 at home.

Chelsea in Fantastic Form, Ajax Also Rolling

Frank Lampard’s young Chelsea squad have really impressed as of late, proving all the critics wrong who claimed they would have a hard time even finishing in the top ten of the Premier League this year. With their transfer ban still in full effect, the new Blues’ boss is getting the most out of the players he currently has, and it’s been working wonders.

American phenom Christian Pulisic seems to finally be breaking out of his shell, scoring a hat-trick last weekend against Burnley and previously setting up Batshuayi for the winner in Amsterdam just a few days before. Other young guns like Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, and Fikayo Tomori are all playing their part, making this team a force to be reckoned with.

Ajax meanwhile, have been dominating the Eredivisie as per usual. Even after losing Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt to Barcelona and Juventus respectively, Erik ten Hag’s side is still lethal in the final third, scoring 3.18 goals per match in domestic play. In UCL competition, the Dutch have scored two goals per contest.

With the likes of Quincy Promes, David Neres, Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech posing a threat on the attack, this squad has a lot of different players who can find the back of the net as they proved in last year’s Champions League competition with their Cinderella run to the semis.

Chelsea Should Thrive at Home

Even though Ajax is unbeaten in league play, they aren’t playing as tough of competition as the Blues do in England. They’re a great team and will more likely than not advance in Group H, but Chelsea should have the edge in this match given their recent form in all competitions and the atmosphere of playing at Stamford Bridge.

Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori must be sharp on the backline though in order to prevent Ajax’s attacking threats from finding the net.

Pick: Chelsea win 2-1
