Chelsea in Tight Race After Loss to Irons

The Blues sit just two points up on Manchester United in the race for fourth place on the league table after suffering a stunning 3-2 loss to West Ham United on Wednesday. The loss snaps Chelsea’s six-match win streak across all competitions, a run that has contributed to their steady climb on the table, and also marks the club’s first defeat since the Premier League resumed play three weeks ago.

Despite this week’s setback, the Blues remain firmly in control of their own destiny and remain perched as a strong -190 bet to close out the campaign among the Top Four, and earn a berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Chelsea have been particularly steady in recent dates on home turf at Stamford Bridge, outscoring opponents by a wide 8-1 overall margin in three straight victories, capped by a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in an EPL matchup on June 26.

Willian Leading Attack

Willian has powered the Blues attack. The Brazilian striker netted both Chelsea goals in this week’s loss to the irons and has scored five times over the club’s six outings, fueling attractive +210 odds that he will find the back of the net against Watford. However, the club’s leading scorer Tammy Abraham has cooled off considerably since scoring 11 goals before Christmas. Hobbled by injury, the 22-year-old has scored just twice in his past 14 league outings, and just three markers in 14 home contests since August.

While Abraham’s lack of production remains a concern, it is unlikely to slow down a surly Blues squad that has regularly dominated Watford. Chelsea has averaged a healthy 2.57 goals per game while posting wins in six of their past seven meetings with the Hornets, a run that features three home wins in which the Blues have potted 11 total goals.

Watford Desperate to Avoid Relegation

Shutting down Chelsea’s offense will be crucial for Watford if they are to have any chance of claiming an upset win on Saturday as lengthy +650 underdogs. The Hornets travel to London in desperate need of points after dropping a 3-1 decision to Southampton last Sunday that leaves them just one point out of the relegation zone.

Overall, Watford have tallied just one victory in their past 11 contests across all competitions, and have particularly struggled on the road, where they have racked up a dismal 2-4-12 win-draw-loss record this season and have failed to score while falling to defeat in each of their past three contests.

Defense Key to Earning Points at Stamford Bridge

The Hornets have picked up just one point in eight overall visits to Stamford Bridge in this century, and expecting them to snap that run with a win on Saturday is likely too much to ask.

What is more likely is that the club has used the additional training time they enjoyed this week to hone a defense that has limited opponents to just a single goal in five of their past eight road dates. While that may help to keep this game close, wagering on a Chelsea victory by a multi-goal margin offers plenty of value.

Picks: Chelsea -1.0, -1.5 (+105); Willian to score anytime (+210)
