There are two Copa America Group Stage matches for us to get stuck into on Friday June 18th. Group A started off with Paraguay beating Bolivia and a draw between Argentina and Chile. Uruguay are yet to play in the competition – Luis Suarez and co get their tournament underway against the Argentines on Friday.

Group underdogs Bolivia are way out at +1400 to beat Chile. It should be more competitive between Uruguay and Argentina as former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Suarez go head-to-head. Argentina are favored, though they are still out at +108 to take all three points.

Chile Comfortably Favored

Chile will be delighted to come out of their match against Argentina with a point. Outplayed for much of the contest, Chile conceded plenty of chances to a star-studded Argentine attack, but they held them to just the one goal, which came from a wonderful Lionel Messi free-kick. Having got the toughest group fixture out of the way, Chile are heavily favored on Matchday 2 as they face a Bolivia team coming off a rough loss to Paraguay.

Playing the entire second half with ten men, the Bolivians were demolished by Paraguay. Lucky to lose 3-1, they had just 22% possession and only a handful of shots, while the Paraguayans got off 34 attempts. Their squad is arguably the weakest in the competition. Only six players play outside of Bolivia.

Chile has a recognizable squad in contrast. The core of this team has been together for years, getting big wins in major tournaments. The experience will stand them in good stead to avoid an upset on Friday, though the absence of Alexis Sanchez (foot) makes them a less threatening attacking team.

Bolivia, meanwhile, are without Marcelo Moreno (COVID-19) and Jaume Cuellar (suspension).

This should be one-way traffic. Chile has much more quality than their Matchday 2 opponents. If Bolivia are going to be dominated by Paraguay (even before the red card), they aren’t going to be able to live with this Chile team. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this match is over before half-time.

Pick: Chile to win both halves (+135)

Argentina vs Uruguay Odds

Matchup Spread Moneyline Total
Argentina vs Uruguay ARG -0.25 (-129) | URU +0.25 (+108) ARG +108 | URU +270 | DRAW +230 Ov 2 (-137) | Un 2 (+114)

Tight Match Expected

Argentina created enough chances to beat Chile, but they were unable to capitalize. A draw is far from a disaster given Chile’s quality, though it puts pressure on this match against an experienced Uruguay team. If Argentina are to progress as group winners, they will need to pick up all three points in Brasilia.

Uruguay bring poor form into this match. They were held to consecutive goalless draws in World Cup qualifying by Paraguay and Venezuela. With the attack misfiring, La Celeste should welcome back Edinson Cavani from a suspension on Friday. Cavani will be reunited with Luis Suarez in the front two, with the pair both enjoying great seasons at club level. They are two of the favorites to win the Golden Boot as Uruguay chase their first Copa America title since 2011.

Building on a rock solid defense led by Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, Uruguay will be happy to absorb Argentine pressure. This has the makings of a cagey affair, with both teams prioritizing avoiding defeat over victory. Argentina will find it much trickier to create chances than they did against Chile.

The patchy form of Uruguay will put some bettors off backing them. Their price to win the match is too short, but there’s value on the double chance here. Happy to take a draw, they have the defense to limit space for Messi and Argentina’s creators in midfield. Suarez and Cavani are always a good bet to nick a goal for a 1-1 or 1-0 here.

Pick: Uruguay or draw (-130)
