A thrilling clash of styles could be in store in England vs Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate’s England team progressed to the knockout stages after winning Group B.

Meanwhile, Senegal was second in Group A behind the Netherlands.

This tie pits Senegal’s reigning African champions against last year’s beaten European Championship finalist. So there will be plenty of pedigree on show in England vs Senegal.

England was also a semi-finalist at the Russian World Cup in 2018.

*Statistics from World Cup finals 2022

Along with Spain, England is the joint top scorer at the World Cup with nine goals.

This is largely due to its stunning 6-2 opening game defeat of Iran.

There was subsequently an uninspiring 0-0 draw against the USA.

But England then returned to form with a comfortable 3-0 victory against UK rivals Wales.

Senegal opened with a 2-0 defeat by the Netherlands

Then came a 3-1 win against Qatar.

Subsequently, the second spot in the section behind the Dutch outfit was secured with a 2-1 defeat of Ecuador.

Over/Under & Spread

With a 9-2 goal difference in the group stage, England has been prolific at the tournament so far.

It also has the competition’s joint top scorer with Marcus Rashford of Manchester United currently on a tally of three goals.

So it is likely to be worth considering a selection suggesting there will be at least four goals in England vs Senegal at +330 (TG Ov 3.5.)

Although England’s central defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and John Stones have performed impressively so far in Qatar, there were doubts about them before the tournament began.

So Senegal’s quick, counter-attacking may catch them out although it has been solid rather than spectacular so far.

However, Senegal’s star striker, Sadio Mane – formerly of English EPL club Liverpool and now with Bayern Munich – is absent from the tournament with an injury.

The team will also be missing its influential midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who is suspended from England vs Senegal.

With a goal difference of 5-4 for Senegal, the oddsmakers think it unlikely this will be a low-scoring game.

England will probably have more possession than its opponent. Moreover, it has a strong midfield and wide attack set-up, with Tottenham’s Harry Kane leading the line – and it can attack quickly in England vs Senegal.

A price of +200 is offered for there to be only one goal (TG Un 1.5.)

There is not much on offer among the spreads for England – with the only positive price the +125 offered for Southgate’s team to win by at least two goals (Asian Handicap -1.25.)

A win for Senegal is priced at +160. This would also be classified as a win if England vs Senegal is drawn after 90 minutes (Asian Handicap + 0.5.)

Harry Kane To Score Odds

Spurs superstar Harry Kane has scored 51 times in 78 appearances for England.

He has yet to score in Qatar.

However, with 12 goals in 15 EPL appearances this season, he is favorite to hit the target in England vs Senegal at + 115 – or +275 to score first or last.

Oddly, rookie international Callum Wilson – not a starter in Qatar – is rated as the second favorite at +140.

Then comes Marcus Rashford at +160. So there is some value to be spotted there.

Senegal has had five different goalscorers at the tournament.

The muscular Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly is the side’s figurehead. He scored the vital winner against Ecuador but is priced as a huge outsider to score again at +2,500. An attractive wild card offer there?

The highest-ranked Senegalese player among these odds is Famar Diedihou, who scored in the defeat of Qatar.

He is priced at +450 to find the net in England vs Senegal.
