La Liga Matchday 14 season kicks off with Levante versus Athletic Bilbao on Friday. Four matches follow on Saturday, led by the Derbi Barceloní before another four fixtures on Sunday. Rayo Vallecano host Mallorca on Monday to wrap up the gameweek.

After a hiatus for international fixtures, this tight title race is back underway with Real Sociedad holding a one-point lead over Real Madrid and Sevilla. At the other end of the table, Levante are the only winless team in the league, and along with Getafe, they risk being cut adrift. It’s tight in mid-table with just four points separating fifth-placed Real Betis from Espanyol in 11th.

Barcelona vs Espanyol

Xavi’s first match in charge of Barcelona sees the Catalan giants take on their local rivals Espanyol in La Liga Matchday 14. Barca is languishing in ninth and on a four-match winless run in the league. The iconic former midfielder is without Dani Alves (ineligible), Ousmane Dembele, Sergio Aguero and Ansu Fati for the visit of the Blanquiazules.

Espanyol is level on points with Barcelona thanks to a win over Granada before the break. In Raúl de Tomás, they have one of the form strikers in Europe. Only Karim Benzema has scored more La Liga goals than the 27-year-old so far this season.

Barca has won its last four home matches against Espanyol to nil. While the defense hasn’t been at its best this season, they still rank fifth in expected goals against and we can expect a new manager bounce. There’s value on the hosts to cover the -1.5 spread, but we’re taking another clean sheet in the Derbi Barceloní for the Blaugrana.

Pick: Barcelona to win in a shutout (+125)

Atletico vs Osasuna Prediction

With just two wins in five matches, Atletico are under a bit of pressure ahead of the visit of Osasuna. Diego Simeone’s side have been uncharacteristically sloppy at the back of late, conceding seven goals in their last four league outings. Osasuna look like the ideal opponents for Atleti, however, as the visitors have failed to score in their last three league matches, losing two of them.

Los Rojillos have lost on their last five trips to Atletico. Their current standing of seventh is generous – they are only four points ahead of 13th and rank in the bottom half in expected goal difference per 90. It was a surprisingly strong start to the campaign for Jagoba Arrasate’s men, but they hit a difficult period of the schedule before the international break and have come back down to earth.

Atletico is without Kieran Trippier and Joao Felix on Saturday, though they are expected to have Luis Suarez fit to start and Marcos Llorente is returning from injury.

While they haven’t been at their best of late, and Osasuna could frustrate them at times on Saturday, this should be a routine home win for Simeone’s side. Osasuna lost their previous two fixtures 2-0, and this may end in a similar scoreline.

Pick: Atletico Madrid -1.5 (+145)

Real Sociedad vs Valencia

Table toppers Real Sociedad have lost three of their last four home matches against Valencia, but they are odds on favorites for this La Liga Matchday 14 encounter. Valencia reside in mid-table and have won just once in their last 16 away La Liga matches.

Sociedad could welcome back Jon Guridi, Nacho Monreal and Asier Illarramendi from injury this weekend, while Mikel Oyarzabal is fit to start. Imanol Alguacil’s side are on a 16-match unbeaten run in all competitions and recorded a 2-0 win over Osasuna before the international break following a disappointing home draw with Athletic Bilbao.

Valencia have both conceded and scored more than their expected numbers would suggest, and they come into this match off two positive results before the break. They are up against it this weekend, though, with Sociedad boasting a rock-solid defensive record at home.

Whether Sociedad can sustain a title challenge this season remains to be seen, but they have a clear identity that stands them in good stead to take all three points against Valencia.

Pick: Real Sociedad moneyline (-140)
