Mexico’s Liga MX Apertura tournament heads into Round Three with Club America the early front runners ahead of second-placed Pumas UNAM.

They are the only two teams with a 100-percent record with Club America topping the table on goal difference.

This is the first section of Mexico’s two-stage league competition for 2020-21 and it has been renamed as the “Guardianes” in honor of the efforts of the nation’s health workers during the pandemic crisis.

Pick 1: Chivas Guadalajara vs Puebla

Puebla are the surprise package early on in the Guardianes and are in third place after two fixtures.

They were rated as 17th in the pecking order of the 18-team competition in the pre-season odds at a price of +10000 to win the competition.

At an attractive offer of +310 to beat struggling Chivas Guadalajara on the road, there is value in taking a chance on Puebla continuing their impressive early-season form.

The game is at 10:00 pm EST on Saturday, August 8.

Chivas are in 15th place without a win in the opening two games but are favorites against Puebla at -118. The draw is +250.

Puebla’s league position may be deceptive as they were handed an opening fixture against league newcomers Mazatlan – and duly won 4-1 away from home.

The Guadalajara team are one of the biggest in Mexico and, in pre-season, they were rated as +1100 sixth favorites for the championship.

Puebla’s league position may be deceptive as they were handed an opening fixture against lightly-regarded Mazatlan – and duly won 4-1 away from home.

But they followed up with a 1-1 draw at home against much-fancied Cruz Azul last Saturday.

Guadalajara’s opening games have been tougher and they have yet to score.

They drew 0-0 at home against Club Leon in their opening game. Then they fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home against fifth title favorites Santos Laguna.

Puebla were 3-1 winners when they last traveled to Guadalaraja in the Clausura tournament in April 2019.

There was a 1-1 draw when the teams met at Puebla in August last year.

Pick: Puebla +310

Pick 2: Necaxa vs Club America

Early leaders Club America meet the current bottom club Necaxa away from home at 8:30 pm EST on Friday, August 7.

Oddsmakers understandably make America the favorites for a win at -118 with Necaxa at +325 and the draw at +250.

However, given the early form, the spread offer of +340 for America to win by two goals looks the best bet here (Asian Handicap -1.75 at +340)

America kicked off the campaign as fourth favorites to win the championship at +600.

They opened with a 2-1 win away against little-fancied Pachuca.

Then came a 4-0 win at home against Tijuana, who now start this round of fixtures in 11th place.

The America team is sharing the goals around with five different scorers already this season – suggesting they may be in the mood to punish Necaxa.

America’s forward Henry Martin scored twice in that win.

The America team is sharing the goals around with five different scorers already this season – suggesting they may be in the mood to punish Necaxa.

In the pre-season pecking order, Necaxa were rated 10th with a price of +4000 for the championship.

But along with Atlas, they are one of only two sides to lose both opening matches.

Things started badly with a 3-0 home setback against the highly-regarded Tigres UANL outfit.

They were then defeated 1-0 away at Juarez, who now sit in sixth place.

Pick: Club America -1.75 (+340)

Pick 3: Pumas UNAM vs Juarez

Pumas UNAM have made a 100-percent start to claim second place. But their fixtures have been against the lowly-rated Queretaro and Atlas outfits.

They are favorites at +115 for a win at home against Juarez at 1:00 pm EST on Sunday, August 9  – with the visiting side at +220.

But the draw looks most interesting at +245.

Juarez are in sixth place with four points after two matches.

Pumas are among the mid-range fancies for the championship.

They opened this campaign with a frantic 3-2 win at home against Queretaro with the Argentine forward Juan Dinenno scoring twice for Pumas.

He then scored both goals in a 2-1 defeat of Atlas on the road.

Juarez began with a 1-1 draw away against Atletico San Luis and then defeated Necaxa at home 1-0. They are in sixth place.

Dinenno’s early-season goal-scoring exploits may make a win for Pumas tempting at +115.

But his team have conceded three goals while scoring five while they have yet to face testing opposition.

Juarez may prove more stubborn after their unbeaten start.

Pick: Draw +245
